    what do you find to be the best size in length an width plus height.

    It depends on your needs. For years, I've used a solid core door 36"x80" mounted to a 36" high base. Sturdy and inexpensive.
    I build some pretty large planes though, so, I have two benches that size. It may be more than some need.

        Hope it helps. I also attach a 1 x 10 to the full length on the back edge. It gives you a place to mount power strips, tool holders etc.
