  • FMS F-18F Super Hornet 70mm EDF Jet

Had my eye on this one for awhile...Talked to some RCG folks who love it. I will be getting it this week. I loves me an F-18. Looks nice. Good quality. Hear it flies great. Anyone Squawkers have this jet? Curious to hear your input.

Not the right Hornet but I would totally paint one up like the Canada 150 CF-18.

I always painted my Freewing 90mm F-18s the Blue Angel livery because it's so cool looking even though they never flew that variant. I didn't mind! ;)

I've got mine ready to maiden. I have an Admiral Pro 6S 4000 in her...Shoved as far aft as I can so it's balancing around 75mm. Have the throws and rates by the manual. What is the popular elevator throw for the mix with flaps? Anything else I should know or do before I kick the tires and light the fires?

                So far my pro's and con's pre-flight:

                Pros:

                1) From a few feet away she looks really sweet and scale.
                2) For the most part, the build was fast and easy.
                3) I like the various livery decal choices.
                4) I like how the control rods and horns were all pre-connected. Always appreciate that!
                5) I like that it has flaps.

                Cons:

                1) I was a bit disappointed in the size. I was thinking it was going to be a bit larger in person.
                2) There were various compression wrinkles on the side of the fuse towards the nose.
                3) Even though the surface is smooth, the overall mold quality is generally poor, especially around joints. I was surprised by that.
                4) I can't stand this trend of going away from traditional Philips screw heads to these weird hex heads. I don't have the proper tools for them and it makes screwing them in a real PITA!
                5) Fitment issues here and there. I think I have grown spoiled with Freewing and FlightLine RC models, lol!

But even with the cons, I have never met an F-18 I didn't like. It's my favorite modern era fighter jet. Looks so cool both static and in the skies. I am looking forward to the maiden!

Some shots after decals. Always need a pristine shot before a maiden because, well...You never know. LOL

                    Maiden success.

It was a bit touch-and-go here and there. Ate up nearly all the parking lot and I was applying more and more back pressure and she still wouldn't rotate. I panicked (total V1 territory as a berm and concrete was within 2 seconds of impact at that rate of speed) and took my hand off the throttle to quickly give myself high rates for my elevator throw and right before I clicked the switch she rotated. Then it was wicked out of trim...Had to apply tons of up and right trim. I had my RunCam on the inboard port wing which explained the need for all that right trim but the nose-heaviness surprised me. So the first half of the flight was fighting the sticks, trying to trim on my new radio (iX12) so it was all kinds of wonky-sauce for awhile. Add in a nice cross wind and YEE HAA BABY!

I tried switching to high rates on the downwind and I clicked too far (on a triple switch) and it suddenly pitched nearly straight up with no power. I have NO idea what that was. Most likely dumb thumbs (maybe I inadvertently knocked the throttle down while trying to engage the high rate?) but that was exciting. I quickly got it back to low rates and powered up fine. My throttle stick doesn't have hardly any tension at all. I've tried to change that but it's not working (but that's for another thread another time). I thought I heard a car coming into the parking lot (it was just wind) so I rushed the landing. I was just happy to get her down in one piece.

                    Sheesh! LOL

The amount of up-trim on on the elevators is crazy. Nearly 40 degrees! This bird could use full flying stabs like the real thing. It's worth noting I did maiden dirty. Tanks and armament. I'll go clean next time, remove the camera from that port-side location, re-trim and go from there. I increased my throws on elevator. Looks like takeoff flaps are in order as well. I hear she tracks awesome, and F-18's tend to fly well so I will just chalk this flight up to needing to get the bugs ironed out. Video isn't fancy, just raw onboard footage.

Second flight today...Was able to shove the bejeezus out of my Roaring Top 5500 as far back as humanly possible before crushing my receiver, lol...Got it to 80mm CG which was MUCH better. Still trying to figure out why the FMS manual has the CG listed between 60 and 70mm? Felt a million times better. Also flew her clean, which I admit, I should have done for the maiden. Oh well. No harm no foul. Just wish it was a little bit bigger. It can look dinky in the air reaaaaally quick. Lands great with flaps. Total blast to fly! LOVE me some F-18s!

Nice flights. I've been thinking about this plane, too. But everything you mention is exactly why I haven't bought it yet. Looks like might be too small and goofy hardware from FMS.

If only Freewing or Flightline would come out with an 80 size F-18. that would be OUTstanding.

It was interesting to find out more about this model. Even with its cons it seems to be the best F/A-18 model currently available. It even looks more scale than the Freewings version.
Hopefully this model might give Freewing the motivation to update their Hornet.

Aros, since your a big F/A-18 fan I though it would greatly please you know that the next new airplane/Module coming very soon to my favorite flight simulator DCS World will be the F/A-18C.
This module will be the most realistic and sophisticated rendition ever developed of the Hornet. It would be as close as you can get to learning to fly the real deal. And one of the skins/liveries that you can change on it will be of the Blue Angles. ;)

Thanks! Well, keep in mind my idea of small may not be others idea of small. I don't mean to demean the model it's just that I have grown to prefer the larger scale models. One of the main reasons is they appear less like "toys" and more like real model aircraft but more importantly they are easier to see in the air especially when they get away from you a bit as jets tend to do in a hurry. I already lost orientation on this bird in the second flight.

As for the hardware, yeah, I have to watch what I say as a rep of MRC but, um...Yeah. Let's leave it there. LOL

Took it out this morning along with my Phantom...I put my RunCam on the canopy facing aft. Really nice perspective, I like it a lot. But that bird does NOT like the tank and missiles. The camera added some nose heaviness. The flight felt "off" from the start. Weird lateral trim issue and flew super nose heavy. After the flight I removed all the cool looking but draggy stuff from her and flew her clean. MUCH better. So the armament and tank will be retired from here on out unless sitting static.
