  • Looking good James. Whens the youtube video of the work..?
also do you have a link for the 3D printed and sized up ordinance?

And perfectly normal for me doing a maiden with full rates. Mainly because I dont use rates or expo on any of my models. I'm full all the time. No surprises that way. Always know what to expect. And always enough control to get you out of trouble. Also means more accurate flying as not moving the sticks as much. Being that I'm a thumb flyer the more I move the sticks the more likely to put in an accidental movement while reaching. I know that is what expo is for but for me that makes it feel woolly and slows reaction times. Just my personal preference.

    • Hi Wolfgang, rates can be fairly subjective, especially when users add their own Expo. The rates provided in manuals are general guidelines to get people started, and for the most part, I'd say Freewing's recommended rate range for High/Mid/Low have been safe over the years, no less so than other manufacturers. I can't think of a model we've released over the past seven years for which the majority of people crashed because the rates were terribly inaccurate. Remember that often we're talking a matter of a couple millimeters in throw which as a total percentage of the control arc is very small.

It's also important to concede that two users following the same rates, say for example 100/70/50, would have two very different experiences if one of them set their expo at 0/0/0 and the other person set his expo at +50/+30/-10. This is an extreme example, but the principle remains the same: Recommended rates are best viewed as a starting point for pilots to then infuse with their own preferences. Pilots flying a 90mm jet like the F-18 should by now have their preference for expo, and a general sense of how they like to fly their jets, and the ability to quickly and confidently toggle between different rates during the maiden until they find their preferred "sweet spot". I've seen the same jet flown by two people on completely different settings, yet both pilots started with the recommended rates then fine tuned from there for rates plus their expo. This doesn't even add the factor of linkage position.

The rates in Freewing manuals are rates we know to be safe because they are the rates we've flown hundreds of times during the prototyping and testing phases. With each new airplane release, invariably some people think our high rates are too high or our low rates are too low, or vice versa, but in general, the pilot takes responsibility for being able to toggle to other rates if/as needed. I count far more successful customer maidens than crashes due to rate inaccuracies.

To answer your specific question about the F-18, the reason why we recommend maidening this F-18 on high rates is because it's a model that can be flown with larger throws at slower speeds, especially during landing. More control authority is a good thing in most cases, provided the model has sufficient airspeed and a stall isn't looming. Of course, I expect some pilots will quickly toggle to middle or low rates, which is fine, too. There's no perfect answer that will satisfy all of us, I've accepted that.

Should have the video up Thursday or Friday for sure. As for the ordnance, here is what I printed (with links)

Sidewinders (printed at 100%) from DirtyDee: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2747018

          GBU-12's (Printed at 85%) from DirtyDee: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2991798

Litening Lazer Targeting Pod (printed at 70%) from DirtyDee (cost $5): https://cults3d.com/en/3d-model/game...-targeting-pod

Fuel Tanks (actually Napalm Canisters) (printed at 125%) by APmech1: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2859866

Pylons for under the wings (x4) (printed at 100%) by bettsmums: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3229496

Center Pylon (printed at 70%) by bettsmums: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3117452

Then for the wing pylons I used 2 packs of Freewing F-16 rails that we sell here: https://www.motionrc.com/products/fr...hment-hardware

But you could also print these and they work. (I printed these at 70%) for the center pylon from APmech1: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2858226

          • As much as it wasn't fun to do so, I cancelled my Pre-Order. I need to have an appropriate field to fly this jet, and once/if I do, I can reorder it. I had all the decals and paint ready for the Gray version too. Ugh. Ha-ha

One thing is for sure, I'll really enjoy watching the fun mods. people do to theirs and watch the videos.

Thanks James. I might just hold off and wait and see how long it takes for the official ordinance set to come. But this could be a good temporary measure. To be honest I'd be happy with just the side winders on the wing tips the aims missles or whatever they're called hung under the centre of the wing and maybe a centre drop tank though I'm betting drop tank will just get knocked off on a landing on grass...

Think also because I'm in the UK & dont have a 3D printer I'd just download the file of each item I want then get a local company to print it. I did that with the nose leg reinforcement piece on my Avanti.

Only thing is what material would you suggest to get them printed in as I remember I had a few choices when I had the avanti piece made. So glad I had that piece made because the legs is floppy as anything. Took it out the other day but can not see anyway to adjust the play out...

Gotta read the WHOLE THING! First pre-order is sold out.
                    • This is the second pre-order for the Freewing F/A-18C Hornet Blue Angels 90mm EDF Jet - PNP. The current expected arrival date for pre-order 2 is the end of June 2019. The ETA for pre-order 1 remains mid June 2019. Any changes to the ETA will be posted on this page.

                    • Carlbrainiac - Might be waiting a while for a specific F/A-18 set, but we recommend the F-16 set (https://www.motionrc.com/products/fr...set-and-pylons ) as it comes with Pylons and some ordnance the F-18 would use like the sidewinders.

Freewing may just take some of the ordnance from this set and make a new set from it. But this set sold out quick when the Grey F-18 got announced. More on the way.

Yeah I've set it to notify me when that F16 set is back in stock. Think I'll just go for that set. It has everything I want and I assume comes all pre painted although with the greys match?

Due to the new FAA rules released and our field being in controlled airspace (Delta), it is not on their approved "fixed site" list for RC aircraft operation. The situation is currently being worked on in hope of gaining approval from the FAA to be added to their list of approved flying sites within controlled airspace. Although I'm optimistic, there is always a chance that the request will be denied. The field just had a jet rally over the weekend and two FAA reps. were at the field observing, answering questions, etc. They appeared very nice, but the decision isn't directly theirs. If the field does get approved, they can further limit flight operations such as lower altitude ceiling, etc.
That’s quite a shame! I was visiting Apollo Field the week before the jet event a couple of weeks ago. What a great place to fly. However, I did notice all of the airplanes flying low overhead and setting up for landing approach. I wondered how the field operated all of this time with the low flying aircraft. Just figured all was well with the relationship between the field and the local airport.

If they move to a 250 foot ceiling then all of those huge turbines won’t be as fun to fly, I wouldn’t think.

I met met a young hot-shot turbine pilot out there named Koko, I believe was his name? Everyone says he’s the best pilot out there. Really wants to see fly his turbine F-16, but he was just ground testing a new turbine he had just replaced.

I cant see a turbine of that size flying at only 250 ft or less. I hope this all gets worked out. Too much history and huge numbers of pilots at that field to just dissolve it all.

Man CAT, that is a bummer to have to come to that point as I know you have been looking forward to this release. If it ever happened that I couldn't fly jets I think I would get into RC subs instead. I don't think the FAA would have a problem with that.
