  • Yes sir.... sad in deed. Yes. RIP Don.

He seemed like a great guy. Love how he shared his builds for others to do the same or give flame to ideas on how to get the project done.

    • It can definitely turn into a never ending cycle of self one-up-man-ship. Like artists say, it's difficult to know when to stop adding paint to the canvas. I've never had the luxury of having to make that decision. Brad

      • Yeah I love scale detail but my lack of tools/space/skill will keep my ceiling much lower than the Don's out there.

        • My problem is I know the mechanical end of how things work, I just don't have the artistic talent to make the detail scale as I would love to have in my builds.

          • Man that;s too bad, I learned a lot from Don's videos, he'll be missed.

Regarding scale airplanes, someone once said they're never really finished but eventually you just stop...

                      • Hi Tom, sorry this is a well known bug we've been dealing with. Unfortunately there's no known fix for it yet. We'll keep working on it. Sorry about that!

Yeah so true on scale airplanes...You can fall down the rabbit hole awfully quickly. Even Don mentions he was falling out of love with his Corsair just from the maddening work that goes into that level of commitment and detail.

                        • Well it just worked so you fixed it- thanks! Funny, but as I get older I find I have less patience for many-hour builds, but it might just be a phase...

                          • I notice one thing the best scale detailers have in common and that is various levels of machining/engineering/manufacturing/tooling experience. I see a lot of nice, fancy tools in their workshops. Hence why my level of scale detailing will never be anywhere close to theirs. But that won't stop me from doing the best job I can do. I have smoke and mirror methods to achieve the level of scale detail I am after.

                            • The nice tools are great but as with Tom and his dad, recognizing items in craft stores, hardware stores, sewing notions, or plumbing departments, etc. are often the key. At some point you develop an eye for spotting little goodies that will work for a certain scale detail without having to manufacture it. Like the faucet screens, or colored straight pins, clasps from the sewing department or bits of syrene, etc. just sayin'.......... Brad

                              • Definitely good point. For my Legend Models P-38 I pretty much used whatever I could find in my garage to add detail to my turbochargers. Wouldn't have won any static contests but they looked fairly decent, especially compared to the terrible stock molds.

                                • Could have fooled me, they look great! I'm sure others will add some good ideas as the build thread continues as to how to accomplish certain challenges. That's the beauty of these threads for sure. Brad

                                  • I definitely will need all the help/tips I can get. I have to fake my way through a lot of mod/detail work but if it looks good it is good, right?

                                      • Last time we drove through NW Washington on the way up to visit family, all I could see were endless fields for R/C.
When you live in Wy, you get used to seeing a, shall we say, less than green horizon. Then you go to areas like Washington, or Wisconsin on the other side, and its just awesome. Mind you, we HAVE been pretty green out here the last couple of years as we finally got out of our 10 year drought and now we've had the biggest snow fall accumulation since the 60's, so we may actually have flooding!
Geez Aros, I thought you had already made the pilgrimage to Corsair land.
You're fortunate because they have a couple of Corsairs parked in the Museum of Flight at Boeing field, so there's your reference, hop you take full advantage of it.

                                        • Oh yes, I've taken tons of photos of those Corsairs. I try to go to the Museum of Flight as much as possible. One of my favorite places locally. Gee, I wonder why?

Especially helpful to figure out panel lines and rivets...I know I can get a lot of detail walk around photos online but nothing beats being in person and drooling.
