I talked with a tech at MRC before I bought mine, and he did say there is a big difference in performance over the 80mm 9 blade EDFs. I also installed 130 amp ESCs and all 10 awg wire. I'll post when I get more stick time with it.
Some added caps. soldered to the leads close to the ESC is also a good idea if you haven't done so already on the 130A ESC's. The wiring is extraordinarily long in this model, so it is worth the time to do so.

I had my 80mm EDF A-10 using the stock ESC's, yet with the Freewing 12-blade fans with inrunner motors (1857kv). They are a drop-in fit, provide good power gains, and sound significantly better in this model than the stock power system. It takes very little time to install, which is nice. It does add some weight, and that needs to be accounted for by adjusting battery location, etc. to bring the CG back to where you need it after the install. However, the additional weight wasn't a noticeable issue on this model, in my opinion.

My other A-10 used 130A ESC's, Castle Cap Packs, and Freewing 90mm EDF's (and Freewing's 90mm Nacelles). It was an absolute monster with thrust, especially from transition from slow speed to climb, etc.

If I were to do it all over again though, I thought the Freewing 80mm 12-blade EDF with inrunners was a happy medium between all factors for me, specifically added thrust for the weight, improved sound, minimal install time (because I was able to use the stock 100A ESC's installed, and the Freewing shroud drops right into the nacelles), cost, and the look of the 12-blade fans while the model was static on the ground.

    • These are the ESCs I installed. It already has extra caps wired to the unit.

I did take advantage of trial fitting the speakers before gluing the fuselage together but I don't think it is necessary. I cut a hatch in the bottom and framed it with strips of 1/8" plywood. Not having the back of the fuse glued on did help with knowing where to cut though.

No. Just the transducers after I had two of them fail on a Corsair using an Aspire system.

              • Ok. Thanks a lot Dude. Can't wait to hear this system in action. I watched your you-tube video of the system on the test board. Really loud!!! Love it.

                • Hey Dude, I just watched the video of your BAD ASS A-10 when you taxied up and down your street. Was there much difference in sound between the test bench and that video? I know you were using the 4" speakers on the bench and the 2" exciters in the bird.

                  • I noticed no real difference.

                    • How thin did you make the bottom foam where you mounted the exciters?

                      • If I recall correctly it was around 1/4" or so.

                        • Ok. Thanks Dude. I'll let you know how it comes out. That smoke unit I made from an E-cigg works very well.

                                • Got a question for Jetdude. I'm installing the Shockwave system and wanted to know what type of glue you used to glue the foam panel to the wood frame where your exciters are. Do you think Foamtac would work, or should I use CA?
Lots of vibration, and Foamtac is flexible.

                                  • Not trying to open a can of worms here, but Just want the facts. 9 blade or 12? Both 90 mm and spinning the same speed. Which one makes more thrust?

                                    Comment

                                    • My experience has been that 9 blade has higher top speed, but the 12 blade has better low to mid range thrust

                                      Comment

                                      • So for a short runway, a 12 blade would be better. I think I'll go back to the 12. Thanks!

                                        • I'm trying to find if there was an adequate front gear mount replacement and if it was mentioned in this thread. Maybe I'm just to dense but did anybody find a worthy fix for the weak front gear mount?
