  • Wow, that is a really cool bunch of workmanship! So happy to see the final results after all this time. Ed did a great job and I am so looking forward to this spring when everyone finally has the vaccine(that wants it) and it will be safe to come up to the island for that maiden flight. The way things are going with Happy Jack's Go Buggy, it might be a double maiden. Hope we all come through this horrific virus experience and we can get back to having some fun without worrying about contracting this bug.

    • Amen to that Brad! SO looking forward to getting her in the hangar AND having this insidious pandemic over with! Would have expected more from our government in the beginning of the third decade of the 21st century but that's a topic for some other forum community some other time, lol.

Ed is shoring up one last thing. Turns out he needs a larger drill bit in order for the TruTurn hub to fit the prop. So another few days. Wednesday's the new target...What's another few days after a few years?? LOL! Ed sent some more photos tonight. One thing I'm stoked about is even though we had to dump the Frank Tiano radial dummy (didn't fit for electric, not that I am bummed or anything after all the detail work I put into it, lol) , Ed found a cheap alternative that while may not have the detail work of the Tiano version, it actually fits really well and with some paint and weathering, will look pretty good, see the photos below.

His one concern right now is the nylon spacers he used for the motor mount. He's concerned about potential cracking. Something we will be monitoring carefully on the bench tests.

Just excited how close it is to finally bring her home. It's going to be hard not to want to paint/weather/detail her out as I wait for the time to maiden even though it goes against my better judgement. Then again, I have enough in her already, I highly doubt $40 bucks worth of paint and weathering tools is going to make much of a difference.

      Go Hawks!!

      • The new dummy radial looks pretty darn good I must say. As to the spacers, if the nylon doesn't work out, I've seen solid round aluminum bar stock used for that. Just cut it to whatever length you want and then drill a hole through the center for whatever screws your using to attach to firewall. The weight shouldn't be much of a factor. I have the same struggle with my better judgement regarding finishing the Go Buggy. I can justify the spinners and black and white sandable primer on the outer wing panels to increase visibility but that's about it. At least with the original tri color scheme on the Queen, you'll be able to tell top from bottom. We'll see if the Hawks can pull off a win against the Rams today. They still don't have Carson. Drat!

        • Good idea on the spacers...I'll see if these nylon ones hold up.

Sucks that Russ has gone into a slump. MVP talk is over. I think we bounce back against the Cardinals though (I predicted we would lose to the Rams, they just seem to have our number).

          • Okay, I know I sound like the Boy Who Cried Wolf but NOW I really do believe with one final issue Ed had to resolve, I should have her in my hands no later than next weekend.

After the prop hub drill bit issue which was taken care of, the final thing Ed had to figure out was the strut brakes. The photos I sent him of the mod others had done (see below) wouldn't work because they were not the Robart struts I have. So he had to order some material to manufacturer a brace for them to attach to the struts. A T-bar extruded as he said. He got the part Thursday and started working on it yesterday. Should be done by the end of the weekend.

Now I need to start consolidating the garage to make room! That's a whole other project.

            • That sliding channel looks like it should work. I remember seeing some of those pictures years ago. I think that guy was in Norway, if memory serves, which it does less and less. Seems like Ed has been great throughout this project and I commend his sticktuitiveness. Is that a word? Spring is around the corner right?

              • Yeah Ed has come upon challenges no question, and I agree, I appreciate his tenacity not to just complete the build but to do it the right way at every corner. 3 years+ later, all that matters to me is that she is going to be a quality build and bird through-and-through. Here's to a COVID-relaxed Spring Maiden!

                • Aros It's hard to believe it's been three years already! Looks like Ed is doing it up right. That's going to be one stressful maiden. We're all going to need a round of shots when that one's done!

                        • affirmative!! BTW the new dummy radial makes the motor look like the crankcase sort of. I had envisioned that early on. If you paint the front of the motor bell grey, it should look even better.

                          • That's a good call on painting the motor bell! I never thought of that...Especially since this isn't the fancy Frank Tiano radial, that would help with the scale-ish appeal.

Ed's just about done getting the strut brakes attached. CLOSE!!

                            • Ed sent me some photos tonight. He's done some nice work getting these strut brakes attached. He said he needs just one final part from Home Depot to finish the mechanism and she's all done.

                                • So it turned out the down and lock controller was frying the left gear door servo...Apparently Ed went through several servos, even high voltage servos that ended up frying. The controller looks to be old as the ones currently being sold on the Down and Locked website look more modern and smaller. We tried contacting Mitch who runs D&L but he never got back to us in a timely manner so we ended up buying a different controller altogether. It's a Xicoy LGC15 controller that someone Ed knows with the same ESM Corsair uses in his.

It's from Europe and I was pleased with how fast it arrived. What we weren't so pleased with is that it didn't come with the specialized MCPX 6 pin plug. So Ed had to order that plug which is set to arrive tomorrow. We are both beyond ready to have this build complete. Thankfully Brad gave me a nice deal on it but I've put an additional $1K or so into it since I bought it and I have yet to have it turn key in my possession. I am hoping that FINALLY FINALLY that comes to an end this weekend or next week at the latest. Crossing fingers there isn't some other delay or part that needs to be purchased.

This is by far the most I have ever invested in a single model in my life and I am going to be a nervous wreck maidening her for that very reason but I guess it comes with the territory in this hobby, lol. Still keeping an eye on COVID to see if a maiden in the Spring at Brad's is going to be feasible or not. Sorry, my apologies as this never really did turn into much of a build thread, rather more of a "status update" thread. When I do finally have her in my possession I will post plenty of photos including the repaint/weathering process.

                                  • Aros welcome to world of big complicated birds. 1K is actually pretty cheap. If you continue further down this path, you'll soon learn that it's best not to add up the reciepts at the end of a build. Just fly it and have fun.

                                    • That's not including the cost of the build but I get what you're saying. I love the size and presence of these giant scale ARFs but the cost is prohibitive. I think I'll stick mostly with the EDFs and foam warbirds...I can handle the $600-$1K larger foam warbirds and EDFs but these $4K-5K+ adventures is just not good for my pocket book or blood pressure!

                                      • I am so with you on that Aros. I just hope someday that Motion will come up with more two meter plus foamies and some method for hardening up the super soft surface on them. That would be pretty close to the best of both worlds.
