  • Phaser Tank 1947

3D printing can be both such a boon and a bane. While browsing 3D sites for inspiration I encountered some interesting "what if" turrets and guns for tabletop RPG gaming on the Cults site: a Sherman tank and alternate turrets for "1947 Dust Warfare".

I contacted JVM3DConcepts to ask if these were something that could be adapted to our r/c tanks. I only needed one of the turret options, the "M4A3E75D-VF turret with a 360W Boreal Phaser main weapon". The originals are in 1/48 scale. After looking, they said it was possible. They did their magic and sent it on to me. Because of the 3X enlargement, the resolution was pretty coarse, so some extensive sanding was in order. The resin JVM used was very easy to work with.

As you see above, these turrets were originally intended to fit on a Sherman chassis. However, JVM3DConcepts suggested it look better on a T-34. They were right! The following shots are from a function test after I performed the following steps. The barrel was bored and reamed to fit a Heng Long rotating beacon. A machine gun mount on the turret front was bored to fit a flashing mg. A hole was drilled in the turret front to house an IR emitter. The cupola was drilled and routed to fit a LegoDEI IR receiver. The bottom of the turret structure was cut off and the turret was mounted on a spare turret base and ring gear. Unfortunately the 3D print is in only one piece so there is no elevation capability. A disadvantage sure, but not too fatal on a flat battlefield. It's not expected to be a contest winner, just a player.

I mounted the turret temporarily on an existing T-34 hull. Now that I know how it looks and works, I'll pick up and paint another one. That way I can deck it out as I personally see fit. Maybe "Girls und Panzers" decals?

Can't wait to see what the final looks like. You always do such a great job on your builds. 👍👍

Looks very much like the AMX 13's oscillating turret. I wouldn't be surprised if that's what it's based off of.

If you do try it on a Sherman, consider what the M4A1 FL10 looks like:

Absolutely, I had been planning on using a Sherman for the very reason you've mentioned. Too many similarities to ignore. For some reason, the big phaser barrel looked better on the T-34. Maybe once the 3D designer sees mine he'll be motivated to modify the design. By the way, to those here who are fluent in 3D design, the original is free on Cults.

Here's a shot showing it on a Sherman hull

Have you been on the cheap rye whiskey, Bob. 🤣
          Another outstanding what if build.

The phaser is a pocket device powerful enough to destroy a whole building. Is a tank mounted phaser gun for planet destruction? It is entirely possible as long as they can find enough Nadion particles. It can also be used to create a flying tank using its anti-gravity effect. The possibility is endless. Let your imagination fly.

Wouldn't it be something to have a "Master Fictional /Non-Historical/Custom/What-If Builds Photo Thread"? 👀

You could always start one. There have been several builds here like Bobs and they are pretty cool.

Lol, am I allowed to start such a thread? The main photos thread was started by Alpha; I thought it was like an admin thing only to post "master" threads.

The tank is finally done. Instead of buying yet another tank just for this turret, I chose to mount it on my existing t-34, currently in Egyptian colors. Tan is nice for Southern California anyway. It only takes a few minutes to swap back and forth. BTW, Murphy's Law is alive and well; the phaser light (a rotating beacon) promptly failed while I was taking photos. Everything is demountable and replaceable, but really?

"Following the extension of World War 2 as noted in my "Gatling Panther" thread, battles continued to rage across Europe, North Africa and the Mideast. This spurred many advances in weapons technology, including focused energy beams. Given the continuing need for tracked vehicles to support this new weaponry, existing inventory was drafted for use. In this case, an Egyptian T-34 chassis was mated to a modified AMX turret. The conflict had spread to desert theatres, so the vehicle remained in a compatible color".

Credits go to Anerdsnerd on Cults for the turret design and JVM3DConcepts for the production print.

I had Callie Graphics produce some GuP decals. Although this tank isn't truly in GuP, I felt it needed some kind of identity.
