  • PVC stands 1/2" or 3/4"?

I' m going to out together a PVC stand for my Tigercat this week, I'm going with one i saw here on the forums,

I built a stand for my P-38 and users 3/4" but it looks like 1/2" would be string enough for what it'll be sued for,

I'm just curious what size PVC you are using for stands to transport your planes (if you use one).

1/2" is plenty strong enough for a transport stand but I think most folks use 3/4 or 1" to get the diameter up to provide a shallower radius against the foam even with insulation padding. If you've ever hung a foam model with a 1/4" rope and then found the grooves and sometimes paint removed were it hung you know what I mean... I used 3/4" on my wall stand primarily because I need the strength for the 2 foot unsupported pipes for the planes to rest on.

I normally use 1/2" pvc. However, I did use 3/4" for my Tigercat. It is my heaviest plane and I did not want to take a chance with 1/2".

I, personally, wouldn't go with less than 3/4". 1/2" sags under its own weight. Doc

I use 1/2" but make sure it is Schedule 40 and always look as I have found the thin walled PVC mixed up at the large Home Improvement Stores and I mean both of them. Not everyone working those stores knows the difference but you will when you make one out of the wrong size. I remember pointing it out to the kid stocking pipe that day and he looked at me like I was an alien. Had to actually show him the ends. I have used 1/2" for making a large stand for multiple planes and next time would go with 3/4" but for anything that is an individual stand or something I use to transport in my vehicle the 1/2" Schedule 40 is plenty strong enough.
