  • DIY plane stand

I stumbled across this nice stand the other day but at over $150 shipped sure wasn't going to buy it, though my back and knees are increasingly telling me I need something like this at the field.
Copying the design, I picked up 3/4" PVC fittings, pipe and pipe wrap at Lowe's (I had the steel tubing on hand from something) and put it together this morning. The fittings are a snug fit and were left unglued so the cradles can be rotated if needed. The pipe wrap is nice neoprene with self adhesive edges and the feet are scrap softwood- the tubing fits nicely in holes bored with a 7/8" Forstner bit.
As you can see, the width (and therefore height) is adjusted with a knotted cord. Cost for the parts was about 20 bucks- electrical conduit or something similar could be used in lieu of the tubing I was fortunate to have lying around.
The stand with a model on it seems quite stable but I obviously won't be leaving it unattended if much wind is blowing- think I'll drill some holes in the feet for pegs.
