  • German aircraft livery

    Hello scale enthusiasts,
Have been looking at the various German WW2 aircraft and would not mind adding a couple to my fleet but in looking at all the different ones available I have noticed one common discrepancy with them all. The tail swastika has been removed or alternatively replaced with the iron cross. The livery is an important aspect that us modelers(at least me) like to hold true to when representing a model. Has our society become so politically correct that manufactures fear that there would be a public backlash for decaling the model as it was in real life?? If this be so, then don't even recognize these Nazi aircraft by manufacturing them. Yes, the Nazi used this very powerful symbol to murder millions of people, but for 3000 years prior to this it had positive meanings. Just because I would like to represent a historical airframe with accuracy does not mean that I condone or advocate what the Nazi party represented. Until our society quits sticking its head in the sand on subjects that are like a cancer to us then we truly never will be able to heal from the pain and disfigurement of these "cancers". I guess I'll just have to find a way to decal or paint this swastika emblem myself in spite of the political correctness!!
    Regards,
    Charlie

    RE: German aircraft livery

Not sure which one it was but Rich at RCinformer did a build and review on one that came with the emblem but it was at the pilots discretion to add it or not . I personally am not bothered either way but I do see where your coming from . I mean the Zeros have the Japanese red dot on them and they bombed us !! To me its all about the  history .

      RE: German aircraft livery

I remember reading that when the made the movie "the Battle of Britain" back in the sixties, they bought the 'German' airplanes from the Spanish Airforce (actually the ME109's, the Spanish lent them the HE 111's as they were still in service!), but they could not fly them over French airspace with swastikas painted on them.  I always wondered if they took the same offense to the Iron Cross emblem from WW1?
Now if you watch the videos from some of the German RC enthusiasts, they're flying this HUGE B17!  I guess things have settled down a little over the years.  Hey we still have people taking offense over the Confederate flag here in America, but we have german airplanes with swastikas in our museums, go figure.

In some markets, it is not only considered in bad taste, but is also illegal to display the Swastika. That, even though it is an ancient symbol that was used as a good omen, until the Nazis redefined it. Even displaying it in an add that may appear in those markets, even though it is not actually for sale there, can cause problems for the marketer. Bottom line: if you want one on your model, you'll have to paint it yourself.
