  • FIRE AND SMOKE

    Another beautiful day in the Pacific NW, Clear skys and 65 degrees. On the the grid, Roc Hobby P51 Strega VS Dynam P51 war bird powered with a 4s. Stock motor and ESC.

    When I arrived at the field today I saw the Dynam P51 in the sky and it was hauling! I was like no way, so I approached after he landed and he was running a 4s in his stock Dynam P51 war bird. Arent you only suppose to be a running a 3s in that thing I asked? He said yep, but he read on a forum a 4s works, so he tried it and it was very fast. Dont it get hot I asked, He said dunno, never checked. So I walked away amazed and shaking my head.

    Took the Strega up and was just cruising around, practicing tight turns at a moderate speed. Then I heard coming out! It was the Dynam P51. He got air born and was tailing me. Mocking my every move. So I sped up a little and started running around the pylons in race formation and slowed a little to see if what I was feeling was right. Here he came as I heard him hit full throttle. It was on!!!! I punched it and around the first set of pylons we flew. Side by side down the back stretch the Strega starting to pull out in front. Around the second set of turns the Strega held tight pulling out even further. Down the front stretch we came and I heard a spudder from the Dynam bird, Then I heard a heavy vibration sound and then silence. A quick glance and the Dynam P51 Mustang was ON FIRE IN THE SKY! Smoke and flames trailed the Dynam bird as it came crashing down with a loud THUD in the middle of the airfield. It broke into pieces on impact and became just a large smoke cloud and crackling sound. Then I heard a fire exstinguisher go off as I was landing. The Dynam P51 was a total loss. As the owner was cleaning up the mess he says, Guess I should of checked to see if my 3s bird was getting hot using a 4s pack. I didnt say it but I was thinking it! REALLY? :P

          I doubt that he did Doc. You hear about it all the time that a novice to the sport reads something on the forums and takes it as the naked truth and starts doing mods without having any concept of the basics behind the electric theory to understand if they are putting themselves or others in danger. Makes me wonder what if that person wasn't flying at a club(and a lot don't) when this happened and instead of the burning craft going in on the airfield, it plummets into a house because they were flying from a cul-de-sac of a residential area. Folks like that are bringing as much unneeded scrutiny to the sport of RC flying as the rogue drone pilots are who are flying over public events and such.
          Got that off my chest, with best regards;

            RE: Smoke, and Fire= Crash

            UPDATE: No video on this spectacular crash. It sure reminded me of watching Black Sheep Squadron when a plane goes down trailing fire and smoke. I have never seen anything like it out of an RC Aircraft. After bursting into smoke, and flames, the owner said it just simply rolled inverted and nose dived into the ground. I was flying mine at the same time so I only got quick glances as to insure my own safety. I was very happy to see where it crashed and nobody got hurt, Humble pie can really really suck sometimes. The owner said that it was only his 3rd flight on her as well. I heard through the grape vine that our club leadership is investigating this one. Something to do with negligence and endangering the well fare of others. So I think the lesson here people is ALWAYS BENCH TEST FIRST! They make thermo temp guns for reading temps for this kind of thing, and air cooling mods are a must when ever an upgrade is installed. TEST IT, TEST IT, TEST IT,   :exclamation:  Thanks for reading  :cool:

              Sounds exactly like my crash today minus the smoke and fire (faulty ESC). Sucks for the Dynam owner, sure hope he learned something.
