  • I'm Telling You, It's a Mystery!!

    Greetings Gang,

I posted this response related to good magnets on the "Freewing A-10 Build" thread,  but, I also wanted to throw it out for the input from "the gang"!!

****I also want to be sure I'm not going crazy(er)!!****  :(

Now, in the tradition of disappearing bread bag ties and socks once they enter the dryer, can some one please help me to understand how RC Airplanes can mysteriously return from flight without its entire cockpit/canopy?
And no one sees a thing???

I mean, when flying we have constant eyes-on our planes, Right??

Also, one would think that if something of comparable size relative to the entire aircraft, like a cockpit/canopy, were to fly off in flight it would be quite obvious to the pilot who again, is in sustained visual contact with the plane at all times, Right??

And surely someone else at the field would catch a glimpse of a shiny foam cockpit/canopy as it floated gently toward the ground, and mark its location for post-flight retrieval, Right ??

    BUT, NOOOOO!!!!

So, said plane lands and - to the total surprise of the pilot - minus it's cockpit/canopy!!
No one saw a thing (including the pilot!) and said cockpit/canopy is no where to be found!!!! And even after completing a cross-swing search grid, I mean, No where!

What is up with that!!??!!

This X-File mystery went down for me yesterday while flying my Dynam Turbo Jet!! I can't make this up!!!

Now, if you're familiar with the plane, you know it has a good sized black and white cockpit/canopy too......  So, go figure!!!

I realize that the Turbo Jet can move along at a pretty good clip, but I highly doubt it's top speed is anywhere even near enough to disintegrate a planes' cockpit/canopy!!!

    I just don't get it!! It's a Mystery!!

I know I'll eventually stumble across it someday (most likely when I'm NOT looking for it) ...................probably sitting on top of a pile of bread bag ties and socks!!!!!

I don't totally trust magnets, especially when doing aerobatics. I use a little bit of colored electrical tape to be on the safe side. Where do those socks go?!!! Doc

Okay Bill, so, (old Guy Question [OGQ])
It was on when you took off, right?
None of this, "which plane will I take to the field" confusion and you left it sitting on the bench at home.
I gather that you would remove said canopy to insert the battery, sure its not sitting in your tool box or the back of the truck/car?
Lastly, was anyone else flying the same plane and seen an opportunity for spar parts?
Harsh to say, but you never know?

Good luck finding it, hope it comes home, maybe it was just a delayed flight.  Now I know how they can lose your luggage..........

        RE: I'm Telling You, It's a Mystery!!

        Greetings Doc,

Ya know, IF I was doing aerobatics I might at least understand it coming off.
However, the Turbo Jet (while capable) is a scale flyer and I have know idea why it happened.

        Like I said, Go figure.

UM........Yeah!!! It was on there. (But I did check around the bench just to be sure).

I even checked in the dryer when I got home.

Like the truth...... it is out there!!!!

          Maddening.
By the way, how's the flooding in your area, saw the news while in Wisconsin and we were thinking about you.  Pretty bad from what the news was showing.

            Greetings GMan,

            Thanks for thinking of us.

Yeah, it was pretty bad in some areas with flooding.

My area received a lot of rain but little flooding.

Hard to tell now that in even happened.

Good to hear that you escaped the flooding and storm damage. You guys did have a rough season this year, maybe it is past now.

Sorry to hear about your missing canopy mystery. That is odd, maybe lost it in the sun for a second? Just grasping at straws.. At least you are back flying now, and able to enjoy it again.

                Greetings Loneflier,

                Amen!! to that brother!!!!

I suppose one nice thing is that when the rains do stop here, it almost immediately shoots to the 90's and everything dris uo quickly.

That means it is indeed Fly Time!!

                  RE: I'm Telling You, It's a Mystery!!

Seems to have been a strange year all around.  We have had a lot of rain and for Wyoming, its very rare.  I think we saw about a half hour of sun all the way to Wisconsin and it was pretty damp there as well, although they were saying they had been pretty dry up 'til then (figures)

I predict that when you're out there looking for something else, you'll stumble across it, "Oh look, there's my canopy!" never seems to fail that you find everything but what you're looking for.  Either that or someone will knock at your door saying," I hear you lost this" right after the UPS man delivers the replacement part you ordered because you thought you'd never find the original.
That's where the term 'spares' originated I think......

It's going to be one of those when I least expect it things!!!

Hey, if that happens, I'll take it and have a spare......
