    AMA membership?

Ok I'm thinking about getting a membership. I don't belong to a club the closest is 100 miles one way. I mostly fly alone or with my sons. Lately I've been invited to go fly at a couple of club fields that are AMA member fields so I guess I need to become an AMA member. What are the advantages to being a member I was wondering if it's worth it.

    RE: AMA membership?

    Greetings Farmflyer,

I doubt you'll have any trouble getting responses to this question!!

The short answer is a definite YES! You should join AMA!

Of course you can go to http://www.modelaircraft.org/membership/membership/overview.aspx to get all of the specific details.

But, first and foremost your membership dues help support our hobby!!
There is strength in numbers (especially on Capitol Hill) and the more members our supportive political representatives speak out on behalf of, the louder their voice!!!

Normally, if you are visiting the field of an AMA Chartered Club, after so many visits as a flyer/pilot they normally will ask you be become an AMA member (minimum) primarily for the insurance coverage should you unfortunately one day dead stick into someone's windshield.
Or they may ask you to consider joining their club which will typically carry the requirement of AMA membership (for all of the reasons stated above).

In our club, we allow three visits to our flying field as a pilot (sometimes for newbies it takes that long to investigate if the hobby is really for them) and then we begin to require at least AMA membership. Plus, to fly during any club events like Fun-Fly's/Demonstrations, etc., club member or not, you will need an AMA Card !

Plus membership gets you the monthly issue of Model Aviation magazine!!!

    Bottom line, on AMA Membership?

It's Better To Have And Not Need, Then Need And Not Have!!

I second that motion. It's also a requirement at my club.

Yep, long time member here too and I don't even fly at an AMA field. Not only is it good insurance but they are the only ones fighting for the hobbyists interests with the FAA's new ruleset and requirements. That in and of itself is of prime importance to myself and other multirotor and FPV enthrusiasts as well as the fixed wing no FPV folks. They have done a great job with that so far!

AMA is a must!  The insurance alone is worth it, then the magazine is so informative as to what's going on in different states.  Might be something near you that you never knew about that would be worth checking out.

As a matter of interest, is there anyone here that is flying without membership?  Just curious, had the wife signed up before she took her first flight.

I may never actually need it but I hope the fee mostly goes to good use for the cause and not to administrative salaries like so many organizations that were started for a good reason but get salaried to death.

                        Greetings,

It's difficult to say on that front, but I'm confident that I'm glad they are there.

To be honest, if I were simply flying on my own property and was content not to venture out into the realm of clubs and organizations and such, I probably wouldn't join.

Of course, that would be the only reason.
