They're Not ALL Good Days!!

Greetings,

Well, it's bound to happen sooner or later and for me today was the day!!

While having a great day at our flying field, I suppose it was my time for a reality burst.

While flying the Dynam Turbo Jet (as I've been doing for quite some time now) somewhere during a routine aileron turn the aircraft decided that two fully functional ailerons was just one too many. So, as I banked to the left it ejected one!!

What followed, in classic DePalma film super slow-motion, was the image of the Turbo Jet heading nose first toward mother earth from about 80 feet!

The attached photo, as they say, it worth a thousand explicatives!!!! I believe I uttered them all. Bummer, of all my aircraft, that was one of my favorites.

I suppose the only saving grace is that it wasn't pilot error.

Like I said, they're not all good days!!

Ugh, sorry to hear about your mishap. There my be a good side when a "gravity check" happens look at the parts you have to make your own plane.

As a newbie I know I'm beating the odds and my "gravity check" will happen.

Oooops!  I feel for ya.

I went to our club field Saturday for some flying. There was 5 pilots present. We had all flown at least a couple times, no rush, taking turns.
Then it started......With the exception of myself (13 months of flights), all were very seasoned pilots. All flying large gas powered planes.

1.  Shortly after takeoff. His engine died. Bad crash into the Iowa corn field.
2. Next person up. During low pass. Plane rolled right, boom, another gasser into the corn filed.
3. Next person up. While two pilots are collecting pieces and loading up their vehicles. Final approach, not sure what happened(I think pilot error) BOOM! Another plane noses into the beautiful green Iowa corn field.

Myself and pilot #5 at the field....pause...look at each other and say "Go ahead, you can go next"

I did go next. Great flights with a couple of my Mustangs. Many more flights before the sun set over the horizon.

Rktr sorry to hear about your mishap . I seem to have a gremlin to deal with when it comes to  the Turbo Jet . Not sure why guess its my nemesis , we all have at least one . Still waiting to see some of your flying .

I'm beginning to think this weeks mishaps are due to the conjunction of Jupiter and Venus!!!
Nah, just kidding (although it is a beautiful conjunction).

It was just one of those deals where the foam hinge of the aileron wore thin I suppose and the right amount of drag became too much.
Again, I'm just glad it wasn't me!!

I'm sorry to hear of all the other mishaps!!!

Hopefully, they are behind us now and we can move forward and escape the "Gremlins" for another few years.

So far my three major crashes have definitely been me. Two were total losses one repairable. Fortunately I haven't had one in almost 2 years I'm sure I'm due it's just a fact of flying.

Hey Rocketeer,

Sorry about your loss. I have made a habit of putting a thin coat of Welders adhesive on all my foam hinges and it seems to give them more strength. Just a suggestion. Good luck and good flying.

I got turned on to Foantac here at the forum, and applied to all my birds, great product to secure foam hinges!!!

Ouch! I hate to see that plane in so many pieces, and I know it was one of your favorites. However, like you said, at least it wasn't pilot error, and you already have a cause figured out. Now it is time to buy a new one and save the pieces from the other and go back and fly it again! Kind of like getting right back in the saddle again after a fall.

Oh I'm sure I'm not done crashing yet occasionally while flying I'll think I wonder if I can do something new and just try it. That can sometimes end up with a close call. But it keeps flying exciting and the pucker factor active as well.

Dang Bill, that sucks!  Maybe kit time if they're available.  Don't know what the life span is on the foam hinges, but the video for foam tack says that it will work to repair/reinforce and replace a foam hinge.  Might be an idea to reinforce them after a few flights or so.
Little wacky Waco and I have had our foam repair experiences and foam tack seems like a great way to go, that and Gorilla Glue, apparently the white GG has a faster drying time.

Think of it as a challenge, or at least a winter project

Yeah it was just one of those days.

Funny thing is... I have FoamTac, Gorilla Glue AND Hinge Tape......

Did I bother to think to use any of them?? Of course not!!!
Am I thinking of them now?? You bet your sweet bippy I am!!

Hind-sight IS 20-20....

If you saw the photo then you know this bird is way beyond repair.
It's get a new one time (shopping is one of my top 10 favorite hobbies)  and salvage the retracts, servos and connectors for spares.
