  • Need help with a maneuver

I'm not sure what this maneuver is called, so I'll try to describe it. Its when your in a downward spiral and the tail of the plane has a pretty big wag to it. Pilot Ryan does it in some of his videos, and I've seen countless people do it on youtube.

I can get the spiral, but I can't get the tail of the plane to swing around into the wag. I'm sure it takes rudder input but I can't seem to get it. I'm a self taught pilot so any advice would be great!

Are you talking about a blender. I think that's what you are talking about. And I know I can't tell you how to do it. I'm still a Rookie, Rookie. Good Luck!!

RE: Need help with a maneuver

        Hi Jeff,

its quite difficult to say what the maneuver is you are talking about without actually seeing it. It could be a simple spin, a spin is one of the three basic maneuvers that all others are built upon. it does require rudder and elevator input, and in some cases it may also require aileron as well.

The Blender mentioned above is an extreme maneuver requiring extreme control surface movement to perform.

        Martin.

          Hi Martin

Yeah I'm sure its difficult to decipher what I'm trying to explain. I will just keep trying different inputs and try to stumble upon it.

Hi, cap. What are your rates on your rudder? Some extreme aerobatics require extreme rates as well as large control surfaces, as with the Lomcovac. What is the plane you are attempting this with? It probably requires a highly aerobatic plane. Good luck! Doc

              Hi Doc
Right now I'm trying it with the p51. If I remember right, pilot Ryan does it with the Zero. I've also seen you tube vids using high wing planes. I wish I could explain it better. Oh well, I'll just keep trying

RE: Need help with a maneuver

                Hi Jeff,

Looking at the video of the Zero, the maneuver you are referring to is a spin. The following is the correct technique for entering and recovering from a spin.

The first requirement is height, you can loose a lot of altitude during a spin. You need to be three mistakes high to start with. Fly into wind and at the center point infront of yourself slowly close the throttle. As the model slows down, slowly apply up elevator. The model will begin to stall, and as it does so apply full rudder in which ever direction you like. Hold full up elevator and full rudder, the model should drop into a spin.

Sometimes you may have to apply aileron as well in the same direction as the rudder. Try entering the spin both to the left and the right, some models spin better in one direction than the other. Let the model spin two or three turns and then begin the recovery.

Stop the spin by first neutralizing the controls, rudder, elevator and ailerons if you need them. The model may require half a turn to stop, but it will stop. If it doesn't you may be holding on rudder or elevator. The controls must be neutral. Don't get hypnotized by whats happening and watch the model go all the way to the ground, believe me you won't be the first to do that.

After the spin has stopped, left the model drop vertically to recover flying speed, as it continues to drop slowly apply power and a little up elevator to bring the model to level flight. Do not pull up elevator to sharply or the model will stall and begin another spin. Let the airspeed build up before applying up elevator to level flight. Try to recover to level flight into wind, it is less likely to drop into another spin.

The spin is one of the basic aerobatic building blocks. An awful lot of aerobatics incorporate a spin of some sort or another.

Write and let us all know how you get on with it.

                Martin.

Thanks Martin!! I was trying it using rudder and ailerons. Never thought to hold elevator. Cant wait to give it a try again!
I will certainly let you know how it goes!

                  Thanks again

RE: Need help with a maneuver

                    Hey guys,

I just watched both of our zero videos. One with music has a spin near the beginning of the video. It's just as Martin describes except I'm doing it inverted so to speak. Down pressure rather than back. Makes no matter, still a spin. For some reason I tend to do them inverted usually, i think I can make it spin slower that way.
Let us know how it goes for you.
                    Ryan

HA! SUCCESS!!  Oh man, you guys shoulda been there! It was a thing of beauty! Lol
Its an easy maneuver when you know what inputs to give. It would have taken me forever to figure that one out.

I hope you guys realize how much I appreciate the help. You not only tried to help me when I gave a vague description of the maneuver, but you actually took the time to go watch the video to figure out what I was trying to describe!  That's just plain awesome! You guys at MRC ROCK!

Oh yeah... and the cherry on top of things..the big beautiful brown truck showed up today and dropped off the new addition to my fleet. The FMS Zero.
                      What a fantastic day!:)

                        Hi Jeff,

Glad to be of help. I'm pleased it worked for you and you had a great day. incidentally if you have any other aerobatic ideas you would like help with just say.

                        Martin.
