How can you put Safe mode functions in a plane?

  • #2
"SAFE" is a registered trademark of Spektrum. Is this what you are talking about? If so, then you must buy, install and program a "SAFE" receiver into each plane you want to have this feature. SAFE has many features, one of which will put the plane into level flight no matter what attitude it's in at the time just before you flip the switch. Programming these receivers require a computer or smart phone APP and possibly a patch cable and a firm idea of how to program the device. The best way to get this feature in a plane is to buy one that has it already installed and programmed. Many Eflite models come with this ability.
Or are you talking about "auto balance" or "recovery" mode which is incorporated into some receivers like the Lemon/Admiral series and some stabilization devices like the HobbyEagle? These can be programmed to put the plane into level upright flight when you get into trouble and flip a switch. They don't always work.
Or are you talking about "failsafe" mode, which some receivers have. This is supposed to put the transmitter sticks and switches into a pre-determined position when signal is lost so the plane doesn't do too much harm to something or someone when it comes down.
Or are you talking about putting the plane into level flight and making it come back to you on those occasions when you've lost sight of it or lose control of it or have lost orientation. Then you look at something like the Bigaole "return to home" module.

I'm a new pilot and I'm just learning to fly and safe mode has saved me from crashing a lot on my little dhc-2 A600 beaver. I don't know exactly what it's officially called but I can flip a switch and the plane will straighten out into level flight so I can regain control and it also limits the amount of input I can put into it at the same time. I'm looking for something like this that if I want to build a plane I can put in and I have a couple of semi crash planes that a friend gave me that I can fix and I would need something for those. Thanks for any help you can give me and if you can specify a specific receiver I would appreciate that.

"SAFE" is the registered trade mark of Spektrum that is used in Eflite (and other brands) of planes. SAFE is as you described. It puts the plane back into level flight if you take your hands off the sticks and it limits the amount of angle in all of the 3 axis. Other devices call them by different names. One is a gyro stabilized mode with or without limits on bank angles. To have the plane save itself when in trouble and go into level flight, some devices call it "auto-balance" or "recovery" mode. Those modes don't consistently work.
For now, your best bet is to buy Bind N Fly or Ready to Fly planes with SAFE from Horizon Hobby dealers or directly from them. If you are adventuresome, you can buy a blank Spektrum 636A receiver and program it to do the same things for installing into a different plane. Other than that, you will have to do what most new pilots do - start with stabilized products, learn how to set them up and learn to fly until you no longer need that kind of help.

Not sure about the small Beaver, as I think that is basically UMX/micro sized if it is the one I am thinking about, but I have installed a SAFE receiver out of the Apprentice on a few of my planes. I like it for the AS3x gyro and the 3 modes of SAFE. On my PBY, The small planes, like anything in the UMX range is too small for the Apprentice SAFE receiver. It would be best to get the Sport Cub S UMX with SAFE built in.

He's looking for something for some semi crashed planes. I'd go with what xviper posted, the Hobby Eagle gyro. There not expensive, last time I checked, they were under $30 US.

How to use AR636/A on a non-E-flite plane, “with” SAFE

              Fred
Last week I was faced with a new AR636 challenge. I removed a locked-down AR636 receiver with SAFE® from V900, an E-flite speed plane. I wanted to make it fly my new EDF jet, the Freewing Mirage 2000 Tiger Meet. It would be a breeze to reprogram the AR636 today, presumably, with the advent of…
