Well....! Won't this be fun!!! I pity Bill In Okla. with 50 planes which equals 50 registrations. So we have until Feb. 19th to register all of our flying machines. (Correction... If it is simply a model aircraft then the owner gets 1 number for themselves. I think...)

Here is the details on the new rules. Get it done early and you don't have to pay the $5.00 registration fee.

I thought I read in your linked document that it would be the owner that was registered - oops. just saw your correction. Then there's the question of enforcement. Not that I agree with this overreach by a government agency, but can you imagine the manpower it would take to verify compliance? We can't even control the borders. Last thought - thanks to all of those morons flying quads in a less than responsible manner.
    Flying again after many years.

"thanks to all of those morons flying quads in a less than responsible manner." <----- Totally agree....

As far as compliance, I don't believe anyone will even check if someone complied or not but if the owner operator gets caught doing a no-no and does NOT have a registration number then, well, I wouldn't wanna be the first in line to get prosecuted.

        RE: New FAA Rules

$5 each!!!!!!!!? That would come to $300 for me! I read as much of this ruling as I could bear. I'm wondering...Is the FAA going to send out the model airplane police each day to the thousands of flying fields? How are all the modelers in the USA even going to know about this ruling? This over reach is very disturbing. It could be worse, I guess. I understand flying model planes in China has been completely banned.... Where all these planes are made! MADNESS ! Thank you, so much, irresponsible drone flyers!!!  Completely chapped, Doc

I always thought of myself as a law abiding citizen, but I'll be dammed If some idiotic drone flyers and the A typical government morons are going to dictate to me how paying is going to make me a more responsible flyer than I already am.This is just the beginning, say goodbye to your rights as a responsible hobbyist. Pissed big time!!

I made it to page 20 on the regulations. Now I have a headache and in a bad mood

I already have my planes added to my homeowners liability policy and am an AMA member. I think I'm covered fpr being responsible

                    RE: New FAA Rules

Hey guys, just read the AMA's write up on this.
It's $5 for 3 years no matter how many airplanes you own.
They're working on a plan so that we can use our AMA reg. number instead of another number from the FAA

I was hoping that they would see fit to be sensible about this, but apparently not.  When's the last time any aircraft got buzzed by an R/C airplane??
Of course, when's the last time the Gov't was sensible about anything?

So this is going to be just like gun control, all of us honest folk will be forced to do this and the 'rogues' won't.  That's why they're called rogues.
                    Stupid Stupid Stupid!!

So, if you see an idiot mishandling a drone, report the a......le

I guess they have to figure somewhere to come up with the $1.5 billion dollars they want to give to Iran.
Wait 'til they start firing missiles at us, I want to see the FAA try to collect off their unmanned drones!!!!

That is my understanding as well, and was verified on the news tonight. Still, if they have to register people, why not make them join the AMA?? We have all the same information on our AMA registration information, plus insurance. Why do we need a separate registration process from the FAA??? Again it is the people who follow the rules that are subjected to more rules and regulations, while the miscreants that flaunt the rules will never bother to register their "drones".

                                    RE: New FAA Rules

It is asinine and poorly thought out, 250 grams and requiring a 13 year old to register. A Canadian goose has a lot more kinetic energy and a 13 year old doesn't have a credit card. (I like that the FAA doesn't like the government's own tracking and ID number, the Social Security number.)

I'm thinking of flying large foam Free Flight models with the FAA address as the contact info in the, "If found notice".

I'm also complying with the ruling in hopes that the data base will help show how large the model community is. As we know the AMA membership is lucky to cover 5% of model users.

I'm also writing my reg # in water soluble ink and on highly flammable nitrocellulose film. So when the jack boots ask to see the numbers it is there but should I loose the model the weather should destroy the number and if a battery heats up the film should also burn.

I also like how the bureaucrats in these press conferences don't even know the regs. This isn't just the FAA but just about all parts of the government. As an aerospace engineer I knew the regs I had to deal with by heart. And when I went up against the FAA I re-read the reg in question. Really some of these government employees are just political henchmen and have little or now idea of what they are regulating and the consequences of the law and rulings they are implementing. This ruling will bring India into the forefront of Aerospace engineering because that 13 year old isn't going to play with toy airplanes. He is going to expand his imagination and skills into just about anything else.

Like a divers license teaches folks how to handle a car, this is asinine! This does nothing to inform the pilot that common sense doesn't already dictate. This will not improve safety and really never was intended to. It is here to monitor the public and to try to protect the police, when the FAA issues a "No Fly Zone".

Remember Ferguson's no fly zone. It was issued to keep the NEWS helicopter out, so that there wasn't video of the police actions instigating (violating the civil rights of the public) the riots! We need more cameras and drones with cameras to fight "police" brutality. Remember half the constitution and her amendments are an attempt to rein in the police state.

And then comes the real pain to the common man the re-registration every 3 years. You will have noticed in the FAA conference call that they said they would like to charge more but per the 2012 appropriations bill they are limited to charging only $5. The law at the time did not even consider our toys "legal aircraft". The framers of the law had no idea that the FAA would put such a burden on the "Aircraft registration" part of the law that 5 dollars sounded reasonable for your "N" registration number on your experimental aircraft or your 747.
While the FAA can't regulate our models they can regulate just about every thing else. Like when, where and how we fly. But the models they have to keep their hands off. But since they require a number on the aircraft they may be in violation of this latest congressional mandate to keep their hands off of model aviation.

The FAA is thinking like a US corporation when they say "We aren't eliminating your job. It is just moving over seas" You still have a job, just that you have to move with it.

Thank goodness for the AMA going to bat for us! It could have been a LOT worse. They are the NRA of the model airplane community. The FAA claims that ALL aircraft, no matter what size, have always been required to register. They have just ignored models up 'til now. How kind of them! Never mind the USA congress.  Aside from the FAA's ignorant over reaction, I am mostly p-ssed at the stupid, dumb a-sed, retarded, irresponsible drone flyers who brought this about!!!! My Chihuahua has better sense! Wow, I need a sip of red wine! Doc

Lets be clear the AMA is our SIG but they have no political clout. Unlike the NRA which has the politicians by the short hairs. The AMA is better than nothing but not buy much. Without money the AMA can't control congressional action that will benefit us or be written with our best interests in mind.
