  • TechOne Neptune Blue 64mm EDF Jet - replacement servo protector

One of the plastic pieces that protects the wing servos fell off & got lost. The replacement parts have been on backorder for ever! I finally decided it was time to dust off the flying wing & figure out a way to get it flying again.

I looked all over for something that had a similar shape but failed to find anything that would work ( a really FAT ballpoint pen might - never found one), balsa seemed like a poor choice, so after many weeks of looking & thinking, it hit me - plastic milk jug!

I happened to have on in the recycle bin. As I looked at it I realized the handle was pretty close. Fortunately, I had one of the original pieces so I was able to get a good idea on size & shape. 15 minutes later weilding an Xacto #11 knife I had the piece. I glued the heck out of it. It's not real pretty...

Maiden flight went well & no damage on landing. Now to see how long it lasts.

I have used plastic spoons to cover small servos before. I've used the spoon section over UMX linear servos and have used the thin bent section to cover the horns on other small planes. Ping pong balls also work but take some shaping and a little work to get a flat section to glue. I read somewhere about using milk jugs as gear doors as well and have always wanted to try it out.

Glad it worked out though and it's a good reminder to check the kitchen and junk drawer for substitutes on the out of stock parts!
