  • Price change coming May 15th for Freewing, May 31 for balsa

I want to make sure all of you saw this announcement which we posted on motionrc.com about 5 or 6 weeks ago: https://www.motionrc.com/pages/2021-pricing-update
I'm trying to keep all of our loyal Motion RC customers informed as much as I possibly can. If you have any questions, please let us know. The one thing I would like to address is some of the speculation I've seen. We are not raising prices to make more money. We are raising prices because we are forced to do so since every input cost has gone up significantly. In fact, after the price increase, we will be making less than we were a year ago. Despite what I've seen some people post, this is a low margin business primarily due to the cost of the molds and tooling to make these planes. When Samsung or Apple or another large company make a product, they pump out a massive amount of product using their molds and tooling. In this cottage industry, we pump out very few planes so the cost of the molds and tooling are factored into every plane. I've seen people say "it is just foam, I can't believe what they charge for foam planes". It is true, foam is not super expensive. However, the mold to make that foam into an airplane is very expensive. Molds and tooling can get into the 6 figure range for a large plane. After the foam and various hardpoints are molded (not to mention scale molded plastic details, carbon internal structure, laser cut wood internals, and CNC metal structural and scale parts), the plane is built and painted by hand often using paint molds and jigs, which are custom to each plane (and expensive). As I'm sure you all know, every material that goes into these planes has become more expensive and labor has become more expensive. There are over 100 people who touch each plane during the build process. Freight costs to get the planes to Motion RC are up about 2.5x from where they were a year ago. Rent and salaries are up in the USA as well as the rest of the world. FedEx raised their prices significantly since the start of the pandemic so we are paying a lot more to get every plane to our customers. Finally, the US dollar has lost a significant portion of its purchasing power so we were paying more for each plane even before the factories were forced to raise prices. As much as we hate to do it, it was 100% unavoidable. Unfortunately, there is a strong possibility this will not be the last price increase in the next year. The US dollar continues to weaken and that alone could force another price increase. Material costs, labor costs, and freight costs continue to climb.

I'd also like to address balsa planes. Balsa planes are also going up in price and while it also has to do with labor, freight, and the US dollar, the primary driver of balsa plane price increases is actually the cost of the balsa wood itself. The price of raw materials increasing is not any secret at this point but balsa has its own set of special circumstances. Due to the fires about a year ago, much of the balsa trees disappeared. This caused a scramble by the wind turbine industry which uses balsa for all the internals of the wind turbine blades. The balsa blades are covered with carbon fiber or other light weight material. The wind industry quickly went to all the balsa farms and signed contracts to purchase all of their balsa for the next 7-10 years. This left the RC plane industry scrambling to find balsa. The balsa factories in Vietnam (like Black Horse) were left paying a lot more for their balsa.

I've seen a few people say customers should stop buying planes and the price will go back down. Nothing could be farther from the truth. All that will do is make Motion RC and companies in this industry go out of business. The costs of raw materials, labor, and freight costs are going up if people buy planes or not. The USD is getting weaker if people buy planes or not. We hate to raise any prices but every input cost is going up right now and consequently we are paying a lot more for everything. I really hope all of you will continue to support Motion RC. We massively appreciate working in this industry and are grateful for your business!

Please, lets keep this about planes and not turn this into a political discussion. If anyone has any questions, I'm happy to answer them.

Thanks for taking the time and making the effort to keep customers and the community informed. Not all businesses are as transparent.
You've got to do what you have to in order to continue offering quality product and great customer support.

Thanks, Tom. The transparency is very respectable, and the situation is understandable.

I fully expected the price increase to happen considering what’s occurring around the world. You’re running a business, so you have to do what’s necessary to continue. I purchase products from many different RC manufacturers and vendors, and Motion RC has been one of them for many years. This will continue. Life is full of change, and I’ll adapt . Support (promotion and purchasing especially) for the hobby is crucial for it to exist as a whole, and I try to do my part in various ways, as do others.

This somewhat backs up the rumors floating around that Horizon Hobby is also going to raise their prices May 15 on almost everything. The number that’s been flying around is 30% increase. If that becomes true, I would find that quite hard to swallow. However, I prefer to hear it from the seller like in this case rather than hearing about it in a rumor.

xviper I could see HH starting the rumor for 30%. That way when it turns out to be 20% to 25% most will say "well, that's not so bad". Creative marketing.

The sad truth is that prices are going up on almost everything everywhere.

I appreciate the warning and transparency but damn, I wasn't expecting it to be as much as it was. Honestly, I'm not sure I'd buy some of these models at the new prices.

I understand the reasons, but these are eflite prices without the benefit of getting a receiver included.

I couldn’t help but be a bit surprised by the jump on some of them too (although we obviously knew it was coming), like the 8S F-22 PNP went from $599 to $679.

The tigercat went from $379 to $455. This is substantially more than the 10% rise announced. I wasn't prepared for the near 20% increase on this and other models.

Yeah, that’s a hefty jump in price.

Still waiting for HH to drop the hammer. So far, they haven't changed anything on their website. Maybe Monday?

Gilatrout - funny, I always thought the Tigercat (and P-38) was way underpriced. (I still think they are a bargain). 2 motors, 2 escs in the same 1600mm size as the single engines from FlightLine. The brand new EFlite 1500mm FW 190 or Mustang in their standard PNP form are still $459.

But of course, these times are never fun for anyone but we are all paying more for everything at this point. I had to use an app to find gas today and was limited to a $20 fill-up, which is half the gas I would have got just like 3-5 months ago.

Again, it's not really that the price went up. I get that. The unpleasant surprise was that we were told 10% but the reality is planes like the Tigercat went up by 20%.

Yes, I'd I've long felt HH grossly overcharged for their planes so matching their prices is not what I would call a good thing.

Definitely not fun, but just to be fair the website specifically said, "While the average increase will be 10%, some planes will go up more and some will go up less."

But still not the news you ever want to have to drop. Weather the storm

Think of it this way. Someone probably gets to keep their job, because if you don't respond to challenges in the top line then it's gotta come out of costs.

Alternatively they could probably drop the prices on the planes and add shipping at the checkout ;)

Hi guys, like I said, some would go up more than 10%. That was an average across the lineup. Some larger planes had to go up more. Copper prices, and metal in general, are out of control and all these planes use copper windings in the motors and for all the wiring. The planes with multiple motors got hammered. Chip costs are way up so planes with multiple ESC and larger ESC got hammered too. Container prices went from $4,000 less than a year ago to over $13,000 now. The larger planes take up more space in a container and cost a lot more to get here now. I hate it too guys, believe me. Every single cost we have has gone up massively. I just talked to our freight company yesterday and they see freight costs going up another 25% this year. The US dollar remains on a downward trajectory which also increases our costs. I have a real bad feeling this is not going to be the last price increase this year. We're doing our best to be as lean and efficient as possible. The price increase you see is only a small portion of what it could have been had we not cut expenses everywhere possible. Unfortunately, at the rate prices are increasing, I think there is a good chance we may have to raise prices again this year. If material prices go back down, the USD gains strength, labor costs and freight costs go back down, we will absolutely lower the prices. I really hope some of these prices go back down. Last week the government published the inflation numbers and the month over month inflation was .8% which is the largest month over month increase since 1982 so it is not looking particularly good right now.

                                  Hi Tom.

The availability of spare parts is more critical than price increasing.

On the plus side if the Fed has to respond to inflation the USD will appreciate (which will hammer those of us who get paid in AUD lol)

Appreciate the transparency Tom. It’s more than most companies provide, in and out of this hobby.

I’m just looking forward to restocks. I’ve been waiting on another Skynetic Havok for 9 months now.
