  • Foam airplane storage

I live in Phoenix, Arizona and wanted to know if store my foamy planes in the garage during the summer will damage the foam?
I have too many planes to keep inside according to my wife haha

I'm in Albuquerque, and while it doesn't get as insanely hot as Phoenix, my planes are fine in the garage. My garage doesn't get that hot though, as it is screened by some trees

Yeah mine gets pretty hot I’d say 95 to 105 degrees in the hottest months

The most important thing is to keep the planes out of direct sun. Direct sun for prolonged periods will "gator" the foam. Also, make sure you keep your batteries in a cooler place than the garage (and in a fireproof battery box).

Just to keep this going, I store all my personal planes in my garage. I have room for about 30 to 35 planes in my garage. When I obtain a new plane, I have to let something go since I've been out of room for at least the last 8 years 😄. That said, I have a few classics I can't let go and the foam quality is still good after all these years in the garage. I still have an Art-Tech Sbach which is one of the first planes we sold at Motion RC. I love flying it even though it has some quirks. I also have a Freewing Mosquito I can't let go and an Extra from the old manufacturer of the Sky Angel 50mm EDF planes (for those that remember those). The Extra is about 10 years old and an absolute blast to fly. We never carried it at Motion RC because it had a couple major problems to fix before it was a good but I love the thing. The foam is still in good condition for all of these.

There you go Tom. We need a new Mossie!

I leave/store a few of my foamies in my cargo trailer and during summer it gets pretty warm in there. Even at 115F there doesn't appear to be any initial degradation/deformation of the foam since it's not direct sunlight. Not sure how good it is for the electronics but after a few years everything still seems to be working.

                +1

Here, where the temp can swing from -15 to +100, none of mine are kept in the garage. Foam would likely be ok but, electronics and wood glue joints may not fare as well. Many people I know, store theirs in trailers and garages. Most don't seem to have problems. Some of the planes look rough but, that is more likely due to other factors lol.

The sky angle 50mm lineup was awesome, the T-45 was a blast to fly. I gave mine a facelift after years of heavy use.

Phoenix here as well. My garage hangar gets way too hot for my liking too. It's just a shell, basically.. so no insulation. I installed a whirlybird the first year. It helps, but still not enough for my liking. I finally turned my office into a hangar. So now only the larger ones have to suffer through it. Well.. at least until I can build a larger hangar in the wife's office!

Mine are in my shop now. Along the walls on shelves. But I also have to take the wings off everything to transport so I leave the wings off for storage as well.

For those that use wing bags to protect the wings when removed, sometimes storing several can be a challenge. We've found that a garment rack and some clips can be useful.

I’d like to share a way to display your EDF jets like artwork inside the house, without ropes, cushions to obstruct the view.
Simply remove rear fan hatch screw with eye hook and tighten down with washer until firm against hatch with eye facing side ways. Hook through with mini carabiner and then hang onto picture hangar on the wall.Click image for larger versionName:	fetch?id=315840&d=1623654853.jpgViews:	0Size:	62.1 KBID:	315843
