  • Death of the Hellcat

As I type this YouTube says I have about an hour before the video is uploaded completely. Today the Hangar 9 Hellcat that was in many of the videos on my YouTube page died. It was windy with some decent cross winds gusting out of the West to East across the runway. I have flown in those conditions many times, several times with the Hellcat. As I was coming in from a landing it appears as I was correcting with the rudder to compensate some for the crosswind a strong gust blew across, the port wing tip was slightly dipped from the correction and the gust caught it and before I could react the wing tip contacted the runway. The result was a cartwheel, the port wing broke in half, the front of the fuse taking severe damage, the fuel tank coming out. Yes it could be rebuilt with several hours of work and some ply and balsa. I have two balsa plane to be built still. A 50 size hangar 9 P-40 Warhawk and a 50 size Hangar 9 Corsair. I have decided that it would be the wise choice to just strip the Hellcat and use all the undamaged servos, battery, receiver retracts etc on one of those planes instead. I am thinking about MAYBE just half arse reattaching the wing and making it a display model. Have not made up my mind. Anyway here is the attached video. Sorry for the long intro to the video. She was just one of those special planes. It probably wont be done uploading until around 10pm Central time. Here is the YouTube location it will be at. Thanks

Man that is a real bummer. Rebuild! Especially if she meant that much to you. Just out of curiosity...what is that noise in the video at about 1:13...just after/during take off??

Sorry to see that Benjack, looked like a great flying plane. I agree with Danloc, it may be worth the rebuild. At the least, don't make any immediate decisions. Let the plane sit in a corner for a week or so before deciding what to do. I have found that giving it some time after a crash generally results in the most sound choices.

Well, that was a bummer Ben! Sorry to see it go to partial matchsticks. :(

Btw, every time I watch one of your vids I always get fooled by the ringtones on your radio. LOL! "What the hell was that!" ;)

It sure flew good. Sorry to see that happen. I was wondering the same thing with the Sam Kinison screaming sounds?

Oh, that is my radio. I programmed silly sounds and voice in it. Full throttle it will make a foghorn sound on some models on that one it is some guy screaming.

It could be done. But with the other two planes sitting in a box ready to be built, plus a 30cc redwing rc 3d plane still needing built etc. etc. It comes down to storage room as well. To be honest I like the idea of just stripping it. Patching the wing back on. Hanging it in the garage from the rafters as a static/display. I look at it as a earned retirement!

yeah I put all kinds of silly sounds on my radio. My yellow nose Mustang says yes my lord when I raise the wheels. My eagle 580 makes a klaxon horn sound when you advance the throttle past 3/4. It use to scream "are you f****** nuts let me out of this thing" when I snapped the ailerons past 3/4, but I took that off. One of my planes the radio sings ground control to Major Tom when I activate the Landing Flaps.

                    Hey Ben,
After I watched you fly that yellow nosed beast @ NEFI was thinking to myself that I never heard the "yes my lord" wheel raising comment but then again how could I over the monstrous motor sound you had from the 4 speaker MrRCsound set up ;)

The yellow nose plays the ground control to major tom song when I put flaps to full. I never used flaps though at NEFI because of the wind. The yes my lord is..I have to think which plane that is. Well I dont have my radio handy but I think it might be when I put my wheels up on, I cant remember which plane haha

Priceless Ben, I was just in awe at the size of the 1700 mm Mustang over the 1400 mm. Having never seen one before, its was great. That's one thing I found was all the Motion R/C products there to see for real and watch people fly them, it was great when your the only one out here flying electric foamies, or so it would seem.

I am the only one at my club who is flying any larger foam planes besides one other person. They have the carbon z t-28. We do have some members flying 1400mm size foam planes. I was the first person to show up flying FMS. There is some parkzone stuff. But overall my club is mostly nitro. But there is more electric now than gas. I am seriously considering building my first electric balsa. The 1700 mm planes are pretty nice. I use to have the P-47 but got rid of it. If you really like a big presence the P-47 1700mm has that. It actually looks larger than it is. I think its because its wings are so much wider. At least that is my theory.

The VQ KI-61 is in line behind two priority replacements. I really don't expect to get to it until this flying season comes to a wrap and the snow comes back to upstate NY.
I have decided to replace the Seagull(balsa) AD-4 Skyraider with an HSD(foam) A-1 Skyraider. The other replacement is the P-39 because when I put it on it's back while being a dumbass playing with a Harrier/STOL routine in those strong winds during my landing, I found after closer inspection at home that the firewall was ripped loose so have decided instead of doing all that rework that I'll just retire the ol' gal and replace her with the smaller VQ version which is 1/8 scale 49" span versus the VQ 1/6 scale 63" span that I had. The new one will have retracts and flaps and a topside hatch for Lipo access that the old one didn't and this new one was another shrewd price acquisition in the same ballpark as the Kawasaki. I am getting syked on my fleet upgrades, no thinning out here due to re-kitting activities!!

Sounds good Charlie, maybe Flightline should consider a P39 in a 1200 or 1400 mm!

OH DON'T TEASE ME LIKE THAT DAN!!!!! A 1250mm would be the perfect 1/8 scale to set properly next to the rest of my 1/8 fleet. CMON Alpha, get those guys at FL cranking out another hit.
