planes with no decals and just solid color

It would be nice to be able to buy some models that just come in one base color with no decals. Ready to paint and scheme as you want. The problem is decals. I have yet to be able to take a decal off and not end up with a patch of "hairy foam" where it was at. I would love to buy one that has nothing on it. Then I can paint it how I want and decal it how I want. Just an idea

And there are a ton of like minded pilots whereas I am one of them that agree with you Ben and have asked and asked and asked. It is more than just an idea so PLEASE make sure that the base color is a neutral or white!!!!!

Yeah!...Those blasted decals! I would have bought every one of my planes sans paint & decals. It's impossible to get a sweet, clean repaint because of this. It seems white planes would be easyer to produce and, therefore, less expensive. Doc :dodgy:

I'm with you guys. I'd even go one step further. Don't even assemble/pre-install any of the hardware. I'd rather do it all myself. Heck I'd even prefer to glue the fuselage halves together myself. Most times there are large gaps and too much glue on them.

There were many discussions requesting unpainted kits a few years ago on RCG. Those members who worked directly with the manufacturer always gave us the same response. --> Most people who buy an airplane just want to slap a few parts together and go fly. Those of us who want to do custom work were in the minority. And therefore it was not cost effective for the company to change their manufacturing/packaging process and keep inventory on hand for just a small population. I don't buy that line of thinking.

Give me a true kit, is what I say. :)

The assembly people can be pretty sloppy. Rubber cement spider webs and joint oozes. Oh... and glue finger prints everywhere, including the clear canopies. I would love to be able to assemble and paint my planes from scratch. I also don't buy the reasons given for not being able to do this. DIY'ers like us actually take pride in the appearance of our planes. Doc

We tried to by the plane un-painted plane and they did not sell at all. They pretty much sat in the warehouse and turned dusty. Then what happened was the MFG would do an upgrade and the planes we had were useless. We would only sell 1-2 a year if that. So do to that and no call on them ,we just decided to not purchase them. I do agree trying to remove decals is a pain to do.

If I recall,wasnt the FMS P-51 unpainted kit version the same price as the regular version? I agree on sans paint and assembly..Id prefer to do it myself...but if the kit is the same price as the regular version..then I just go with the regular version fly it a bit until its dinged up or damaged..or I just decide to repaint it. preference though would be unpainted and unassembled. yes, I agree the excuse of not being able to produce them that way is bogus..how much harder is it to just not paint and assemble it?

Or just include a decal sheet, just don't install them. The new Flightline planes are giving all these options to pattern it off of a real plane, or you can get your own decals made.
BBD is a great FMS warbird, but whoever installed the checkerboard decals on the nose wasn't too particular, I'd have rather done it myself.

I'm on board with a kit plane. Throw all the parts in a box with a white air frame and I'll take it from there. You would think war birds with all the different livery it would be a no brainer to offer something like that.

I've been a proponent of undecorated models since I joined this hobby. With all the folks on this and other forums that enjoy custom painting their planes you would think there would be sufficient demand to justify at least a minimal number of each run being made undecorated.

I know the other FMS vendor has had and sold out of a limited number of the 1400mm P-51 in both the D and B models. In fact, they ordered a second batch of undecorated Mustangs, so even if they sold slowly, they must have sold out at least once.

I can see not doing an undecorated version of every plane, but I would think the most popular models would sell if offered sans paint and/or decals.

As I was saying about the E flite Spitfire, the panel lines are very nice, they did a great job on those kinds of details.
