I use a cheap foam airplane stand. In fact, I have 2 of them - one for home, one for field.

I built a stand out of PVC pipe and pipe insulation. It will hold my planes in various positions for me. One side has a flat bar, and the other a cradle, and I put two bars running down the middle which will hold it in a wing vise.

I been there I made myself like little sand bags from old socks some in the toe and then made a pocket at the top. put the plane in a cradle and then hang the sock over the plane. this help steady the plane

One other thing, I have the FMS 41" Stearman and the landing gear has snap ring clips to hold the wheels on. To see it I use magnification.

Can anyone point me in direction to buy a pair of pliers that I can use. All automotive I've found are too large.

          Thanks for all the responses.

Snap ring or "C" clips? There are these:

I have a set but have not found the need to use them yet. C-clips, I do with other simple tools (like small, flat screwdriver or hemostats).

Go to Harbor Freight. They have a whole range of small tools perfect for modelers. I use hemostats constantly while building or repairing. Doc

I use two different airplane stands depending upon the plane I'm setting up and the shape of it. I have one stand made by HSD hobby that folds up for a small profile and expands to a height and length needed for whatever airplane being worked on, and the locking mechanism has teeth that interlock so the stand can't collapse. I recommend longer screws though on the handles/holders (the ones the plane sits upon) when you assemble the stand (you'll see what I'm talking about as they barely catch in and keep each handle/holder together).

The second stand I use for not only working on planes, but painting them is from Harbor Freight and dirt cheap. It is also adjustable and has foam padding already attached to the bars. It's made for automotive and other crafts, but works great for RC building.

By the way... don't buy from Harbor freight on line. The shipping cost is very high. Go to the store. I learned the hard way! Doc
