  • First Shopping List

    Hi all,
Well after nearly 40 years of being away from th R/C addiction, I'm ready to get hooked again.
The following is what I have on my first shopping list. Let me know what you think.
    1. Futaba 8J 8channel radio, for room to grow.
    2. RealFlight R/C flight simulator software
    3. Freewing Pandora w/flaps
    4. Servos w/hardware for flaps
    5. Eagle A3, 6 axis Gyro w/auto recovery. Solo learning
    Should this get me started?
    Thanks,
    Waggs
    Thanks,
    Waggs

Waggs I don't have the pandora or use futaba but 8 channels should take care of you for a while and there are quite a few here that love the pandora. I'm sure some of the guys will chime in on this. You have a good plan to get started with room to expand. Welcome to the forum and our addiction.

          Waggs,
I think you have a good list there. I started out with the Pandora, with lots of time on the Phoenix simulator to begin with.

I was thinking with winter coming on I can geta lot of time in on the simulator and be ready come spring. After watching the videos of the Pandora, I'm sold.
Way back when... I was flying the Carl Goldburg Falcon 56. I had a lot of fun with that plane. I liked to fun fly back then with some mild areobatics but then who knows now.
I think that simulator it set up to use the Futaba 8 radio.
              Thanks,
              Waggs

                Hey Waggs!

That's a good shopping list. I fly the Pandora in the low wing tail stagger configuration and its a great plane. I would suggest you start with the high wing configuration ( tri gear or tail dragger your choice) until you feel comfortable. The Pandora is a great trainer, intermediate, and sport flyer all in one package,my go to for fun flying. I also have the Real Flight simulator with the Futaba 6 channel transmitter,a great learning tool and great for those days you can't fly. I use it just about everyday to shoot touch and go's and practice aerobatics. Your going to get addicted real fast. It has been a great second time around for me I hope it will be for you also. Have fun and good flying!

Thanks Roy, I appreciate your comments. I'm not sure if I'll ever need 8 channels but for the few bucks more, what the heck. I'm wondering which of the simulator packages I need to get.
                  Thanks,
                  Waggs

The simulator helped me tremendously, and I love my J8 even though I have a Spektrum DX7S and a Tactic 8ch. I was out of the RC hobby for 32 years.

Looking at the Realflight simulator there are 3 versions. Any idea what is needed for learning at home alone? There's the Elite, a wired version, and a wireless with SLT, whatever that is. My goal is to learn as much as I can with the simulator and Pandora and end up with a F-15 or 16 EDF at some point in time.
You've been away almost as long as I have.
                      Thanks,
                      Waggs

I think SLT is for the Tactic radios, I have the Elite version which has wired controller and you can also use your Futaba radio.

I think it has do do with some sort of security linking syste. BTW, for $20 more I can go to the 10J. LOL maybe I'll be able to hand it down to one of great grand children.
The more I read the dumber I am
                          Thanks,

The SLT is a wireless unit you plug into your usb port on your computer. It allows you to use your own transmitter that's 2.4 ghz with slt protocol. It will work with Tactic, Futaba, and Spectrum radio's.

Thanks for that information. Sounds great, you can learn to fly with the radio you use.
I am thinking about stepping up from the Futaba 8J (that I haven't bought yet) to the 10J. Only reason being 2 more channels for $20.
The highest level plane I think I would want to fly is either the F-15 or F-16 and not sure if they require any more than 8 channels.
                              Thanks,
                              Waggs

Definitely go for more channels for only $20. Something always comes along and you'll wish you had those channels.
