  • ESC or reciever Battery monitoring?

Was wondering which keeps track of the battery? Is it the esc or the receiver with telemetry? I have a Graupner radio and want to keep track of my batteries to keep them it safe. I know I can get a voltage alarm but worry that I will not hear it on time but since my radio is telemetry ready I would like to use that instead. However like the new A10 it will have two new esc's in them and wonder if I will have to buy two new 100A esc's in order to make sure my batteries are in a safe range. Or is it the receiver that does this, keep track of the voltage from the battery packs?

    Anyways.... Thanks.

My understanding is the Rx gets only about 5 volts via the throttle cable. It may not know what the flight battery voltage is. Flight battery monitors usually monitor the battery directly (like the Lemon telemetry device) via the main battery leads or via the balance port (like the HobbyKing devices). I would love to get the one that RC Informer uses but HobbyKing has been out of stock on these for months.

I use the Lemon telemetry module in a few of my planes but it needs to be bound to each one so I don't move them around. Wouldn't Graupner have some sort of attachment so you can monitor the battery?

If the Graupner telemetry is anything like the Spektrum, it is measuring the LiPo voltage directly. Requires a lead similar to this in the case of a Spektrum:
The Telemetry Battery Voltage Sensor: EC3/IC3 from Spektrum, the leader in spread spectrum radio control.

As xviper2 has indicated, the Rx gets it's system voltage of approx. 5 vdc via the throttle wire which comes from the ESC's BEC, so you measuring the Rx or ESC is not what you want for flight power (LiPo) battery voltages.

Thank you both.... Yea I was recommended from Graupner to

"Depending on the current you need to measure you can use either the electric air module or general air module.

Easiest would be Graupner telemetry ESC's."
if I was considering the A10.... but 100A esc's is an extra 220 bucks which I could spend elsewhere.

Thank you both for the options and I think I found some options and have time to continue my quest:

and these options which being so new at this can get overwhelming:

Like I said.... I can care less at this time about speed, height ect.... Just want to be sure I keep my battery healthy and safe. I Just want to be able to use my radio's telemetry without adding major costs for each plane. It is not that I can't afford it.... it is a matter of using the money for other parts.

          Saint,
Looks like you're on the right track. From what you've linked, the basic/only hardware you'll need are:
Tower Hobbies carries an expansive collection of RC cars, RC airplanes, RC boats, model trains, sot cars, and supplies for all hobbyists.

          Good luck :Goodbye:
