  • HELP! Motor spinning with transmitter off

    Hi all,

Total newbie here. I have the Flyzone Albatross micro and it was great for about a week. Various issues had to be dealt with including a new motor. Now with the new motor in (although this happened once with the original motor) when I attach the battery the motor spins uncontrollably. The transmitter is off and the throttle is down position. It is the Tactic ttx402 transmitter that came with the Alby. I have tried with the transmitter off and it will just go. I also tried with the transmitter on so that it would immediately bind and than I can control it but even then it will occasionally just start spinning. Any thoughts would be helpful.

From reading your post seems to me that the problem here is that your transmitter is off !! When starting your preflight your transmitter must be on before installing battery. Also you need to set your failsafe mode which will prevent the motor from starting. Hope this helped you out

Never , ever insert or connect a battery with the radio off !!!! Your giving power to a uncontrollable motor and will eventually hurt you .

Sounds like you have not programmed the ESC. When you put in a new motor or an ESC it is wise to program it. Before programing a Tactic radio, the throttle must be set in reverse. See this simple tutorial that might help you. Even though you have a Parkzone product this link gives you an idea about programming an ESC. It is very simple to arm a FMS brand ESC and this might help.

Ok that does make sense. I thought that was what I was supposed to do, with the transmitter but even with it on and then inserting the battery I was getting a quick burst of power/w throttle off. That's why I tried with transmitter off. As I tried to take battery out the same thing happens with transmitter on and throttle off. Just a quick burst of power. I didn't see anything about a failsafe which someone else mentioned being on this type of RTF.

Thanks I watched the video and thought some of what he said helped to alleviate the problem. So I took it out and followed the steps and plugged the battery in and wham!! The motor started going uncontrollably. : (

Re: HELP! Motor spinning with transmitter off

With some receivers, the position of the throttle during binding is important, as it is often set as the 'fail-safe', the value used if it loses the signal from the transmitter. The receiver will use that value until it gets a new, valid signal from the transmitter, which could result in your burst of power. Try binding the receiver again, but make sure the throttle is set to minimum for that ESC first.

Re: HELP! Motor spinning with transmitter off

The problem is that with the transmitter on and throttle in the off position just plugging in the battery sends the motor spinning. The binding takes place automatically, there is no button to push and there is a propeller arming system but I'm not even getting a chance to do that because the motor is just going and everything is unresponsive.

Also sounds like the throttle channel may need to be reversed . I run into that with a lot of models . Good part is you can do it in the radio with out hooking up the battery .Your book will tell you how to reverse the channel . Good luck and keep us posted . Also on the Flyzone micros when you get the rtf all should be ok . Radio on , throttle in off , plug in battery , throttle up full you get a little surge . Throttle back to off another little jump . That is telling you its ready . Thinking it should be giving you beeps to go with power jump .

Re: HELP! Motor spinning with transmitter off

I'm beginning to think this is a connection problem. As I move the battery wire around occasionally the problem will not occur but if I move the wire again the motor will start spinning.

Did you solder the battery connectors yourself? If not, I wouldn't be surprised that the battery or ESC needs to be redone. We had a guy nearly lose his helicopter at our club, because one of the battery connectors had solder near the joint, but none in it.

I replaced the motor but never touched the battery connection. The motor runs fine.

I just don't know here. Radio on, radio off, throttle in down position, throttle in up position doesn't matter. The connections all look good. As soon as I start to connect the battery the motor just starts spinning at full power. <smiley image="anim_confused.gif"/>

@Hippie, Suggest you review the binding procedure most Tx/Rx's employ - ie powering up the ESC (plug in the battery) which also powers up the Rx, then hold the bind button & power the Tx on. I don't know if the Tactic system varies from this, but how else ya gonna set it up for binding if you "Never , ever insert or connect a battery with the radio off !!!!" ??

                            +++
@OP, I'm leaning towards what the Baron said - you need to go into Throttle channel on your Tx & reverse the switch. Like reversing servos if one's operating backwards. This isn't reversing the direction of spin (as in swapping 2 of the 3 motor leads), but rather reversing which way is Full Throttle vs Off. It is very easy to 'stumble' your way into ESC programming mode & reset things you never intended. I'd suggest first (read the manual) trying to return your ESC to all default settings. Most ESCs enable it, some don't.

At any rate, this serves as a reminder to ALWAYS do first set of up your electronics during the build with the prop removed. Or any other work where the motor's involved, eg even accidental bumping of the throttle stick. I don't care HOW careful you try to be, doodoo occurs! <smiley image="smiley_scared.gif"/>

I know what your saying but the rtf he is referring to you don't do that with . The board is inside a foam , glued shut , body . It comes ready with the radio from Flyzone that way . I have the Micro Cub .The receiver is not accessible . You bind it by Radio on , plug in battery , raise throttle to max , you get a small surge . Lower back to off then another surge , then beeps and is ready http://manuals.hobbico.com/flz/flza2010-manual-v2.pdf

Thanks everyone. I've been searching around the internet for similar occurrences. The closest I found was someone who had a plane with the same Tactic integrated receiver/esc. He had a pretty hard impact with a tree and after this he began having the spinning motor problem. Upon examination he found some internal scorching near the motor. He believed that the receiver became damaged in the crash. He was never able to get it to work again. This led me to order a new receiver. I"ll let you know if that fixes the problem.

Well it does seem that it was the receiver. I ordered a new one a placed it in the aircraft. Now all seems fine. Thanks everyone for your comments.
