Lipo Storage

I was wondering if any fellow pilots know of any safety box or procedure when storing Lipos. I have a couple dozen from 3 to 6s stored in a box in the garage/hanger and am concerned about the fire danger. Like most of us I have experienced when a Lipo is exposed to air and the resultant smoke bomb it creates. Short of a steel case with doors auto paint shops use for their flammables was wondering if anybody knows of an alternate. I am also thinking of just storing them outside away from any structures.

Hope you know to remove the gasketing from the cans.

Know this is few months old but thought I would chime in. Somehow over the years I have ended up with a couple of unused toasters. Got my batteries in there, not sure that would surpress a fire but seems like its plausible.

Wow, now you all have me wondering. I didn't think lipos just sitting there at storage levels would do anything. I only thought they would explode or burst into flames when being charged, or in use and damaged. Mine are sitting in my basement in the wooden box I keep them in during the summer. I can't keep them in my garage like I do during the summer because it's below freezing. 
I do have an old aluminum camera case that the foam insert had long since rotted out of. That might be a great place to put them!

My first lipos were bought in 7/2010. Still good. I take very good care of them. Never had a problem. (Crossing fingers)

I'm with retiredflyer. Lipos can burst into flames while in storage??!! This is like an endless gauntlet of information with this hobby.
So...where does MotionRC store all the batteries waiting to be sold? In a huge fireproof storage shed?

Manufacturing flaws can cause internal leaks, which can lead to fires, but that is very rare. Usually, there has to be something external to trigger a fire, like high-rate or over-charging, sudden changes in air pressure, etc. Still, I keep my LiPos in a fire-resistant container, in the garage, on the concrete floor. Most of the videos of fires are triggered by the folks making the video, to show how bad the fire can be if and when.

I store mine in a 10x10x6 steel box with a latch. No seal. It's heavy, but secure. My only concern is that if one bad apple goes off, it's by by to several hundred dollars in batteries. Thankfully, this is highly unlikely to happen. The Doctor

I agree with WintrSol one hundred percent. Also were tempted to save a "crashed" battery, I have done this. Crashed a parkzone T-28, battery was little mushed on one end, I would just isolate the battery for few weeks, or forever, in a separate container to makes sure all is good.
