I have been with an AMA certified club in NC since Mar 2011 and fly off the club's close cut grass field. We have the full max roster of 40 members in the club. There are three AMA clubs in my area within a 15 to 20 mile radius of my house. I was just wondering how many of you pilots belong to an AMA club and if not where do you fly? It takes me about 25 to 30 min of drive time to my field.

Re: How many of you belong to an AMA club and fly off their field?
Hey Baron-I am an AMA member, but am not a member of a certified club, although we do have one here in Huntsville, AL, the Rocket City Radio Control club or RCRC. I mainly fly by myself, (thus my handle), off of what used to be a sod farm, and is now a recreational field for one of our local churches. Of course, that has its negatives, such as when they are using it for soccer or football practice. Most of the time, this isn't a problem, but I have been seriously considering joining RCRC to have access to a nice paved runway. The field I normall use is less than 10 minutes from my house, RCRC is about 15 minutes away.

Hey Baron , where in NC are you at ? I lived in Charlotte up until about 10 years ago now I'm in the upstate of SC , Gaffney .
I am a AMA member and the club I joined is a recognized club . The down side is it's a hour away . I do lots of flying at my local high school late evenings and weekends when no one is there . I would prefer to be at the club but its a good drive each way to get there . Too bad that is my closest club I prefer to be around members with experience .But Crashing is Landing

Believe it or not, I'm in Nawf Cackalacki too, 'Down East'. AMA, chartered club - as well as IMAA even tho they went defunct last week. And even tho our field's clean across town from me, it's still an under-10 min drive - that is, when the lights aren't plotting against me. I guess that's one advantage of living in (or near, in my case) a small town. I especially like that point, as it seems every other club around that I've flown at their events seem to have one thing in common: they're way the hell out in the middle of nowheresville.

My club is in south eastern NC , not too far from Ft. Bragg. We have a lot of active military and retired military in the club as one might guess and a few Medical Doctors as well. I am an early morning flyer usually flying in the middle of the week. Most of the time I have the field to myself or share it with one or two early birds.

Re: How many of you belong to an AMA club and fly off their field?
I joined my club, which requires AMA membership, about 5 years ago. I chose that club for a few reasons:
My close friend was a member, and lives near the club field
The field is only 22 miles away
The field is the only one in range that has a paved landing strip, toilet, a pavilion, and multiple electric power stations for recharging.
Plus, the club has a lot of friendly old-timers, willing to help, lend tools, and advise on just about anything (as old-timers will).

I'm AMA all the way. Just joined the Wyoming Sage Brush Hoppers. They have three fields one in Cody with a paved strip, unfortunately, not very well maintained, cracks that can eat a plane. And one in Powell which is a good 45 minutes each way where they have a dirt strip/field where I maidened Pandora Two as you can see in the pictures, nice field, but washrooms have no doors and not maintained. There's another in Cowley that I haven't seen yet, but again a fairly lengthy drive.Team Gross!
