  • Do NOT use regular threadlocker on plastic!

I guess I was stupid to think regular red Loctite Threadlocker for small parts would work on everything.....well is doesn't!!!!! Why would I think it would destroy plastic.....I wouldn't it. Anyway, I am assembling my NEW FMS WACO Biplane and the wing cabanes are held by tiny, self tapping screws into plastic fittings in the wings and fuselage. Well after putting everything together it looked great, however I thought I would be smart (and prevent later disaster in the air) and back out each screw and put a very tiny bit of thread locker on each and retighten. I was just finished with the last of 16 screws, turned the plane over and the entire top wing fell off! What the %$#@#$%. It appears that regular thread locker EATS plastic and caused stress cracks. WELL NOW YOU TELL ME. Every cabane and half the wing connection points have broken off. I now need BOTH wings to be replaced, and new cabanes, non repairable. I am very upset, I really had no idea that this liquid would eat plastic. I went to Loctite's website and if you look at the fine print at the bottom of the uses section it says not for thermo molded plastics as it could create stress cracks........no kidding.
Just wanted to let everyone who didn't already know that, to give you that bit of wisdom before it's too late.

I'm so sorry to hear that ! I did the same thing on some landing gear a while back . I feel your pain , I too learned the hard way . Was hoping to make sure my gear stayed tight and it fell right off . Mine was part of the fuselage . Luckily I was able to change to a tail dragger

But see, here's the irony in your posting this. This very 'thing' about LocTite was covered in here, very recently. Ergo, if YOU had read THAT....... and so, gotta wonder what good will it do for you to be posting it here, ya see? Hitchcockian!

You are correct in that statement! However, being new to this forum, I didn't think to read every posting until I had already made the fatal mistake. NOW I see an earlier posting about Loctite.....so sorry for me....costly mistake.

I agree, that's rotten way to find out but, hopefully, someone else about to do the same thing is reading this.
I have a RocHobby Waco on the way and I want to thank you for posting this as I could very easily fallen into the same situation.

Glad you appreciated the info. I'm sitting here and waiting for MotionRC to get more lower wings in stock.......I hope it isn't too long. I have seriously thought about just ordering a second entire plane then I will have spares for everything.....have to see if the wife will go for that excuse for another plane.
