Aircraft carriers a.k.a haulers

    This is aimed more at the long-time fliers, but any info is welcome.

    First, what do you drive to haul your fleet around?

    Second, what would be your ideal aircraft carrier?

    And last, what would be the most practical given it will also be used as a daily driver and needs to fit in the garage?

    A minivan would be the most practical if you have the length in the garage. I've owned a couple over the years but no one sells a short minivan like Dodge did a few years ago. Ford and Nissan have their cargo vans but the short version is not much better than a mid-sized SUV. Plus, everything has gotten so expensive and fuel milage is just so-so.

    Ideally, a large transit van would be great. Add racks, air conditioning to the box, and you're off.

    What does everyone else think?

    Have you considered a small box trailer? They cost a few airplanes (The New Currency!), but you'll find a thousand other uses as well.

      Greetings Ron,

      I suppose my first question would be, How many planes = "a fleet"?
      How many planes do you normally take, or desire to take, to the field? Like most of us (i suppose) the answer is limited to the number of aircraft our current vehicles safely hold.

      I find that I'm always switching things up. If it's 3-4 planes of varying sizes I can safely haul them in my Jeep. If it's 5-7 planes I'll snag my wife's full sized extended Trail Blazer. If it's a Fly-in and I'm going full-tilt-boogy, I'll hook up to a 12' trailer.

      I have seen some folks take a Dodge Caravan, for instance, gut it behind the cab and create some very interesting racks and mounting shelves. I suppose that would also maintain the fuel economy when transporting planes to the field, still fit in the garage and if necessary one could put the seats back in and haul the family.

      Just my thoughts,

          I just started flying this year. But here's my 2cents worth. I have 3 planes now. 1. Pandora 2. Freewing P-51D IronAss. 3. Durafly P51D Old Crow. I haul all 3 planes in my Chevy Traverse. Don't have to break them down or anything. I fold down the second and third row seats, and the 2 larger wingspan planes (55") fit with room left over to slide the Old Crow P51(43") in. Then of course my "stuff" that I need for the field.
