  • flight stabilizers

Just wanted to add my opinion on flight stabilizers. Yesterday we had our fly-in at Moore Dam in Vermont. Winds were gusting to 23 mph and the waves were really big, the only planes that could fly without really struggling were the ones equipped with the stabilizers they were flying like they were on rails. Anyone doubting the capabilities of these units just needs to see them in action and they will be sold.

Ditto, Chevstar. The stabilizers especially help the smaller, lighter planes. At 22 Bucks from MRC, you cannot buy a better crash insurance policy.

Never felt like I needed one before. Maidened the new SkyMule today in 15-20ish wind blowing straight across the runway. That was the easy part! It was funny (in a panicky sorta way) watching it coming down the runway crabbing at almost 45* angle, but to see the way the wind knocked that lightweight boxy thing all around the sky took _all_ the fun away! It took solid high-rates just trying to keep it halfway under control & headed in the direction you intended, & first time I got it low & near the runway, landing ho!!

But guess what's going in it tomorrow!

I totally agree with you. I have a Super Cub that I love to fly but it is so light that any wind over 5 MPH makes it totally unruly in the sky. I installed a gyro stabilizer and WOW, what a difference. I can fly all the time now, totally different plane. I have now bought 6 more units so I can retrofit more planes in my fleet. I do have a question regarding the 3D mode on the Eagle unit. It states that there is a normal mode, 3D mode, and off. What exactly is 3D mode? I have two 3D planes I want to install this into. If I just want to fly around the pattern I will use the normal mode. If I want to get crazy do I flip to 3D, and if I do what does that do for me? Can I still fly crazy and leave it in normal too? Thanks.
          Addicted to planes!

            Re: flight stabilizers

Frankly I don't know what the end result will be (haven't got mine in to begin experimenting with yet -- been 5 days & I'm beginning to wonder where the heck they are!) BUT....
It's my understanding flipping to 3D mode activates the AVCS (Angular Vector Control System), which is equivalent to HH or Heading Hold on heli's. Supposedly, if a (say) side wind is causing axis drift, this system corrects for it. This is supposed to be one of the improvements the 'SE' model offers over the older Pro version.

Anyone got anything more, I'd luv to hear it too.
