  • First EDF

Looking for suggestions for a good first EDF. I have plenty of experience with both glow and electric props, high and low wing, but have never flown any type of jet before. I like warbirds/military more than sport but am open to anything.

    Thanks!

    Re: First EDF

    Greetings,

I think from your current piloting experiences you'll have no trouble adapting to EDFs.

I will limit my "suggestions" to those EDFs I have flown and/or are available through MRC.

Personally, I would stay with 64mm and above as they provide ample power/speed and are large enough to track easily in the air.

If you were a true beginner I would recommend the Freewing Seagull 4-in-1 Prop and EDF. It features a 64mm EDF, a large 55" wing span and just to keep things interesting, can be converted to a 'pusher' prop.

If you don't mind hand tossing, and since you're a warbird guy, there are some great 64mm EDFs offered by MRC that consistantly receive very good reviews, i.e. F-86 Sabre, and the F9F Panther. As mentioned, these are hand tossed and belly landed.

If you're a runway guy, the parkzone Habu (70mm) could be a place to start or perhaps the Freewing A-10 with twin 64mm EDFs (my favorite) as it is a very stable EDF flyer. The Dynam Turbo Jet might also be the way to go also with twin 64mm EDFs.

Of course there are also the bigger guns like the Stingers, the 80mm F-86 and A-6 Intruder and so on...

Again, these are suggestions and not provided in any order of preference.

The biggest difference you'll note between the props you've flown and the EDFs, is the lag in throttle response. EDF fans just don't gun from zero to 60 (so to speak) and quickly as a prop driven aircraft. This is important to remember if you find your self needing to suddenly abort a landing and so for.

I'm sure in the long run you'll make a final decision that is best for you.
If you have club members/friends currently flying EDFs, that would also be a great place to do your research.

I have to agree with what's already been said. I would add that the Freewing Stinger 64 on 3 cells is an excellent flying plane. If you want not to hand launch, this plane has optional landing gear as does the Panther. I own the Stinger 90, Stinger 64, and F-86 64mm and all are good fliers. Of the batch, the Stinger 64 provides the best bang for the buck.

      Good luck

            Re: First EDF

my first EDF was a Dynam A-10. from what i understand, almost any A-10 flies pretty similar. they have the straight wing design so it wont be too much different then a prop warbird.. just my 2cents on the subject. lol
