  • Freewing MIG-15 successful maiden-Finally

    Hello all,

I finally succeeded in getting my MIG to fly today. My first two attempts a couple of days ago were pretty much disasters, with the plane going straight up on a handlaunch. Well, I repaired the very minor damage to the plane, readjusted the elevator to have more "down", and put in an 1800mAH Admiral battery to add more nose weight. According to the CG point specified, it looked to be very nose heavy, but based on the way it behaved the first time, I didn't think this would hurt it. So, since I am on a very short grass field, I decided to let it slide on the missiles for an ROG, and it worked!!! Even with my adjustments, it still took a lot of down elevator trim to reach level flight, but once trimmed, she really flew nicely. Rolls are extremely quick, loops are pretty big, and make sure you have lots of altitude when you start. I barely pulled out of one loop with about 12 inches to spare before it would have hit the ground.

Anyway, once trimmed, I popped in a second battery, and again did an off the grass take off, and she flew quite well. Now that all is trimmed out, I might try handlaunching again. The rollout on the grass is pretty long, but it did work, and I was able to get this baby in the air!

Good luck to all you guys, and Happy Flying!

I've done that a time or two and; one thing I enjoy doing is making a video of my flights. I'll post them to facebook or you-tube; which ever works best for the day. Well, it's good to hear your flight went well. I really hope, "one day- Motion RC goes to an event, so we can meet everyone. There are a lot of great pilots
in the world today. Take care, hope all goes even better on your next flight.

    Cheers! Matt
Thanks Matt-the loop was a bit spooky, but truth be told, I probably started it from too low of an altitude to start the loop. I am sure with some more altitude, it would not have been an issue. I was just thrilled with it flying well, and took a bit of a chance with it. Sometimes it bites you, sometimes you get away with it! Anyway, it does fly well, and has me thinking about an F-86 for its "brother"!! I have found RC planes are kind of like the old Lay's potato chip ad, you can't have just one!! Ha!

      Greetings Loneflier,

      Congrats, my friend!!!

Sounds like your 'sticktoitiveness' (a Disney word) paid great dividends!!!

I just don't understand (and I'm not alone) what it is about the Freewing 64mm EDFs (MIG, F9F, etc.) that make them so tail heavy in flight seemingly no matter what we do to prevent it, i.e. add weight, extra down trim, etc.

Your final success is encouraging!! Kudos!!

Looking forward to hearing of more great Mig adventures.

Congrats on the successful flight, if you can get someone to do the first few hand launches that is very helpful. If you launch it yourself be sure to concentrate on not rolling the wrist, pretend you are throwing a dart not a baseball. If you roll the wrist bad things can happen. Trust me been there. Good Luck!!

Thanks Wayne. I would love to have a bit of help at the field sometimes, but as you can guess by my "handle", I am normally by myself when I fly. Of course, that means no one is there to see the Oops moments, and the "Walk of shame" isn't so embarrassing either! Ha! Actually, I really enjoy the alone flying time. Kind of relaxing, and a time to reconnect with myself after a busy week.

Anyway, thanks for the tip about the hand launch. Most other planes it isn't a problem, and hopefully now that I have this MIG trimmed out, it won't be so critical next time. It really was fun watching it scoot along the grass for an ROG too. Just have to be careful not to ingest any grass while doing it!

          Thanks Bill,

I was a bit concerned I might be repeating your F9F problems, but managed to work it out and get a successful flight in. Now I am stoked about EDFs again, and wanting to go out this weekend again and fly more-if the weather will cooperate. Sounding like rain on Saturday right now. I did go ahead and order the new Freewing Rebel over the Black Friday sales, and since it has retracts and such, I am wanting to try it out too! My wife is just shaking her head at all these planes!!

            Greetings Loneflier,

            Best of luck.

I know exactly what you mean....... My wife shakes her head so often I'm getting a neck message as a stocking stuffer.
Theory= No Pain, No Complain........ We'll See.

Sweet pick up on the Rebel. Keep us 'posted' (see what I did there?)  :D

              Thanks Rocketeer! :)

I actually committed "new plane" several times over the Black Friday weekend. The Rebel, AND the Dynam Me-262 from MRC, and our LHS had a sweet V7 Red Tail 1450FMS Mustang on a close out special for 180.00. How could I pass that one up?? Now the problem is getting to be, Where to store all these?

But, I am having a blast with them. The 262 I won't build until I get some more time with my F9F, MiG, and the Rebel. But gives me something to look forward to!

BTW-I looked for the video on the new Flyzone Zero, but haven't found it yet. Maybe it is better if I don't see it, if you know what I mean! Ha!

                RE: Freewing MIG-15 successful maiden-Finally

One more update on the MIG. I went back out this last weekend, and just so happened a friend of mine was out there as well, so he offered to hand launch the MIG for me, and I am happy to say it all went perfectly. Now that it is "dialed in" on trims and such, it is a delight to fly. Even in the 10mph winds, it was stable, and with the 1800mAH battery, I am able to get 5 minutes of flight time, and still have about 30% battery left. I did a few more loops at higher altitude and no issues at all. Even landing was great. She pretty well glides in with just a touch of power on, and slides nicely on the missiles. My friend had not yet seen an EDF and really enjoyed it as well. He was talking about having to try one as well, and was asking all kinds of questions about where to get them. Of course, I referred him to MRC, and when he heard they were only $89, well, I suspect next time I see him, he will have one and we can do battle in the air!

Great news on the Mig ! I've got the F9F back together and hoping to try again this weekend . I've learned to take a extra plane with me so can have my confidence back when another one bites the ground , trees , posts or anything else .

I hope all goes well with your F9F flight this time H64. Once trimmed out, these EDFs fly well, and are lots of fun.

As for taking more than one plane, Great plan! I usually take at least 3 or 4 planes along with me when I head to the flying field. That way, after flying one, I can move to the next one while the first one "cools down", and enjoy non-stop flying while I am there!
