I just wanted to let everyone know the mod I've done to my Freewing F/A-18. After having many people tell me to remove the gear and put packing tape on the belly, I found an acceptable alternative. I'm using the 2.4 and 2.0 inch Dubro wing tip/tale skids. The 2.4 inch go just behind the mains and the 2.0 goes in front of the nose gear. Given that I fly at a paved strip with no grass area, tape just doesn't cut it.
I have over a dozen flights on it since doing the mod. It's a completely different bird without the gear. The maneuvers a much quicker, and the vertical is much better. I'm also getting longer flight times.
I strongly suggest this update for anyone flying the Freewing F/A-18.
