Freewing superscale t45 what's faster, inrunner or outrunner motors

Hi Kieron, welcome to Hobby Squawk! We developed our Freewing 90mm T-45 to be flown on the stock 90mm 6s outrunner setup for what we felt was the best balance of power, speed, weight, wing loading, and cost of operation. In general, your target is watts.
A system with higher wattage will generally get more air moving more quickly which roughly translates to higher top speed potential, but remember that this comes at a cost. Watts = Amps x Voltage. If your voltage stays the same, such as using the same 6s battery, then amps must increase in order for watts to increase. High amps means less flight time, because the ampacity in a battery is fixed (for example, 5000mAh in a 6s 5000mAh battery).
If you're after higher top speed and faster acceleration at the cost of higher amp consumption and potentially lower flight times, a 6s inrunner setup will give you that compared to the more balanced 6s outrunner setup. Just be mindful of the tradeoffs you're paying for the advantages you're recieving.
Consider also that not all batteries, motors, and fans are created equal, so there will always be variation; nothing is absolute. A pilot's sense for throttle management also directly impacts actual flight times. We have videos of some of our EDFs flying for five minutes on a 6s 5000mAh battery, when many pilots can't achieve three minutes with the same plane and the same battery. Throttle management, altitude of sea level, and air density (altitude, temperature, humidity) all play a role in a model's performance, beyond what the numbers on the box say.

Generally, an inrunner motor will not fit into the fan shroud of an outrunner unit. They mount differently. Besides, when it comes to cost, the fan and shroud cost only a few dollars. You're better off buying the whole fan, fan shroud and motor combo as an assembled unit. Aside from what Alpha just said, go take a look at your plane, both as the stock outrunner plane and then go take a look at one that is sold as a "high speed" version. You can usually see both offered at RC Castle and sometimes you can see it on Motion, too and at the very least, you may see the inrunner as an "upgrade" fan unit. Look and compare the specs on both planes. Take note of the outrunner/inrunner distinction, see the KV, the number of blades and on RC Castle's site, you can even see the thrust numbers for each if you go to the "parts" or "upgrade" sections. In general, the inrunner has more thrust but you have to wonder why, when specs like battery requirement, KV, blade count, etc, remain the same, one makes more thrust than the other. You also have to wonder why one is called a "high speed" version. If one lacks the technical savvy (as I do) about watts, efficiency, amps, voltage, then deductive reasoning and common sense can be very handy.

I have the 1680kv and the new 1835kv units, so I thought I would upgrade from the 1550kv to the 1680 first then try the 1835, well I have to say it wasn't a big improvement like I was expecting, it seemed to climb out a little faster on take off and a little more speed but I had to move my battery forward all the way to the foam stop behind the front retract to CG it, so it does add more weight than you think and you have to adjust the battery for it, so after all that swapping back and forth I decided it just wasn't a big enough improvement, so I went back to the stock 1550kv and have been flying it that way ever since. The flight times were about the same but the T-45 is heavy already stock and felt even heavier with the inrunner, just my thoughts on that and opinion, one thing for sure though, the inrunner is so smooth and has a better wooosh to it, I am thinking about dropping in the new FW 3748-1650kv unit to see if I can get a little longer flight times with the same performance or maybe a little better because of the new design of the blades.Originally posted by Kieron2019 View PostHi guys, I'm kieron from the UK and purchased the goshawk.. Hi dcorsair, thankyou for your response 👍 I'm quite stuck what to do now.. I've just bought a 1700kv the one that's in the freewing yak as apparently they're very good (I hope!) also if you could help, do I have to use a different fan n housing unit for the yak inrunner from the stock motor what's fitted to the t45.? I'm using the thunder power 5000mah 60c pack is this the same weight as the pack you use or is it heavier lighter etc? I was also told if I use less blades I get more speed and thrust.. Is This true?
