Im using 70mm 12 blade EDF with 80 amp ESC, 2200 4s 25c Lipo battery. Both the ESC and battery get very warm almost hot. Dont know what im doing wrong. All connections good. Should I maybe using a higher rated Lipo??? Someone please reply.

Hey Kenji! I see you're from The Great North West. Lived there once. Visited many times. Your discovery is really about the low discharge rate on the battery. I experienced all that when I started flying and over-propping motors and stuff like that and some of the batteries were red hot after abusive flights. So, I did what most people don't want to do and decided to buy batteries with 45C discharge and up. Most of my batteries are 60C with a few 70C. Yes indeed they cost as much as planes sometimes, but they give you the punch and they stay relatively cool. EDF's really need 45C and up for sure. It's all about throttling. 25C is for mid-throttle excursions with a Piper Cub trainer. I'm not laughing at that, because it is what it is....Think of the 25C as being a "full bladder" and the motor wants power but the bladder is having trouble releasing a good stream. But, a 60C battery when called upon by a hungry EDF, just opens the locks and lets the river of power flow unabated with very little resistance. Like a "flash flood" if you will....After jet flights, my batteries are maybe warm....It's sad that batts cost so much, but there's no escaping Capitalist marketing....But, you generally do get what you pay for..... -
Also, your 25C is likely not pushing out more than 15C in the real world. Very few LiPos test more than 1/2 what they say on the label. The odd one may actually give you as much as 80% what the label says. EDFs are generally tough on batteries and the higher the C you can afford, the better performance you’ll get without the heat and puffing. As for the ESC getting hot, part of it may be due to the low C battery but you should also take a look at all the connectors between the battery and the ESC and the ESC and the motor. A crappy solder or a poor connection can generate heat unnecessarily. If you are using battery adaptors, there’s another place to look for deficiencies. Check to see if the connections are getting hot.

my castle creations 18amp esc was geting hot and making a weird smell in less than a minute or so wen i plugged in the battery(thunder power1320ma). is this is normal? could it be from the wires hat plug into the motor r touching? its not pluged into the motor and the ends r exposed so were the tips just touching? and wen i plug in the battery, the beeps r very low and u can barely hear them.could it be that the battery is low on my lipo? i havent charged it yet and i had just soldered te connecters on the other day and this was the third time u pluged te battery into the esc. does anyone know wats happening? thanksComment

It's hard to say "what's happening" with any certainty (without seeing it all). It's likely you've got a short somewhere or you've got the polarity wrong somewhere. ESC's don't like shorts or reversed polarity.Comment
