  • 3D printed 50mm 1989 Batwing

    After watching a brilliant video by Kyle from Builtfast I was fascinated by his 1989 Batwing edf design, it’s the most scale design to date! About 13 yrs ago I made a scratch built Batwing out of foam board and 20oz foam cup, and it flew for years on end with various upgrades added which I still fly.

    When I saw this amazing 3DP design so scale and crafted to almost perfection I had to find a way to build one! I contacted Elbee on the Squawk and challenged him to this awesome mission, he accepted and we went to work. First and foremost I want to thank him for all his hard work printing and getting everything right, it was a task that took about 3 weeks. I have zero knowledge of 3DP so I was no help and when he finally sent me the parts I was floored at how cool of a project this will be!

    I started the build by putting together all parts dry fit to make sure everything is correct (this is vital before glueing). Even though he has the build on YouTube you can miss a few important parts. I first sanded all the excess pla with a fine grit block and filer. The next day I prepped all parts then began using Starbond CA glue with accelerator, you must work fast and line up every piece one by one. I started with the fuselage then the starboard wing, it all came together quickly. Before I knew it in about 1.5 hours had the whole airframe complete.

    Next I needed to add hinges with the material and method suggested on the video, it worked well, but need to have a hobby blade to carefully clear out notches for clearance. Next came 50mm EDF install I ordered a 5000kv 12 bladed unit with 50amp ESC, with a 3200mah 4s lipo, and 2x 9 gram servos. I thought I had servos and control rods and I didn’t have a good match so I ordered the exact metal gear servos Kyle had in his vid from Amazon along with 10inch control rod needed with horns. I should receive them today and finish the build.

    Batwings fly great if you’re a good hand launcher even better, this build was meant for beginners but I don’t recommend a beginner start with an EDF, the cost alone for this project wasn’t cheap either, can get up to $200 or better if you don’t have the supplies.       Summary: It was a pleasure working on this project with you.

      I had not worked with these materials before, so I am very grateful for your patience throughout the teething process.

      The real proof will be in the flying and longevity of the parts at these Print Settings.

      Light Weight Polylactide or LW-PLA foams as it is being extruded and the amount it will foam (up to 40% I believe) is dependant on what temperature it is heated during extrusion.

      Too much foaming or expansion leads to a very light weight but fragile/brittle parts, too little expansion and the part is heavier than needed.

      As I recall, the heaviest part was the main fuselage body at 73 grams (2,6 oz) or 105 grams (3.7 oz), either way, that's light for R/C aircraft parts.

      I had to research settings and print many test parts to acheive a workable print setting, however, Brinka will be the judge on whether I got it right during flight tests.

      All in all, quite the mission and thankfully there was no need to 'disavow' this guy as a result.

        I think it's dope and i know it takes a lot of talent and an array of skillsets to pull it off. Nice Job and I hope to see more.

            Maiden was unsuccessful due to CG being tail heavy, went up then banked left and nosed dived straight to ground, I was so upset as the whole entire nose section was destroyed, but thanks to Elbee he reprinted the nose sections and the Batwing will have weight added to nose, and a gyro to reassure a good launch soon.

                Are the airfoil sections arbitrary? If not what profiles did you use?

                  The exact 3DP was printed by Elbee he can better answer this question. I'm foreign to 3DP, sorry. It really is a nice design, very scale all glues together like a puzzle. The wings are glued in pieces, (I was a little wary at first but the jet took a pretty hard hit and they stood intact). If anyone tries this build, I highly recommend you get the CG correct with more nose weight.

                    Not certain which airfoil was chosen by the designer. Fat root with modest taper.

                    Designed to be flown with a gyro, I am sure.

                    The vids show the designer just flying along effortlessly, so it is workable design.

                    It just looks so cool sitting there, too.

                      Update, I rebuilt the nose section, added a gyro receiver, and re-calibrated surfaces, added 14 grams of weight to nose, I then went out to hand launch again at half throttle, she went straight up (even while trying to give elevator down) then nose dived from about 12 ft, the front bat ears was damaged but after so much work I'm truly disappointed that she doesn't fly, I''m probably gonna give up on this project as to reprint parts is a hassle if you don't own a 3DP, I'm grateful for Elbee for his help. I will re-glue and shape the ears and sculpt to sit as a model for the time being. I don't like accepting defeat but I have other projects that need special attention also. As I keep trying to understand why the Batwing keeps shooting straight up out of my hand, I believe it may have something to do with the thrust level, it may not be in the right angle. Plus the CG is incorrect.
