  • FJ-2 Refinish Project

I have this bird on the shelf waiting its turn to get some repairs. I got it second hand and flew it around as my edf trainer. After a few rough landings the wire gear gave out. After flying the f22 70mm by Freewing, which is super fun, I thought it would be cool to see if i could mod this old plane and give it some power.

After looking around only for some more info on this plane I discovered its a really nice looking plane.

So far i have a resolved how to fit a 6s 4000 under the canopy, But needs to be fully resolved. I have the newer 70mm that the f22 has also installed and the esc. It works...The larger mystery is the landing gear. I have a two options. Small wired retracts that fit down there, Or a more custom job that really captures the look of Landing gear. The small set of retracts that i have fit in the thin wing and under the nose area. But what they are missing and what would be useful is some oleo functionality. When i was flying it before it really liked to bounce so i would like to see if i can resolve that. I wonder if anyone has some tips one what i could do or how to approach this mod.

I want to show some progress shots on this project. After refinish my F14 im looking forward to push myself.

I’m not familiar with that model but am wondering if you couldn’t use a landing gear set up similar to the F16 70. They both have the front intake and the F16 has that long shaft if there’s room in the cockpit for a servo for steering. Just a thought but I love your ideas

I have that plane , ill take a look.at the gear to see if it fits. I can cut farther down past the opening to make more room. The plane i think needs to be a little nose high.

In this pass I was refining the battery fit and looking into how to mount it. There isn't a lot of room in the nose area for a deeper retract case but i think we can get creative. I have about 21mm of depth to play with. Im not a fan of the small wheels on these cheap retracts.
