The BAC Lightning was Britain’s first and only home developed supersonic fighter. Conceived in the late 1940s as a high altitude bomber interceptor, it entered Royal Air Force service in 1960 and remained in frontline use until the late 1980s. Based on the P.1 research aircraft, the Lightning became instantly recognizable for its stacked engine configuration, blistering speed, and powerful climb. No. 92 Squadron operated the Lightning in Germany, where its role shifted from high altitude interception to low level defense.
