  • LX A4 SkyHawk PNP vs. Lx A4 SkyHawk KIT with Freewing electronics

Banana Hobby came out with the A4 SkyHawk last month. Since no one else sold this model I got one immediately. Banana Hobby is only 20 minutes from where I live. I drove down and picked one up. They have great customer service. They allowed me to inspect both the PNP and the KIT. I bought a KIT for me and a PNP for a friend of mine. He is not an experienced plane builder, and wanted the PNP version. I on the other hand wanted something that would fly as good as any of the Freewing 80mm or 90mm EDF jets. Having had some experience with LX (Blitz RC) models, I knew that no matter what, these planes would need some upgrades to make them fly right. I placed all freewing servos, 100A Freewing ESC and Freewing 2938-2085KV inrunner motor with 12bladed EDF. Both planes did not come with manuals. There is no online manual as well. So I contacted Banana Hobby and asked for the GC for the plane. They told me that it was 600mm from the tip of the plane. I figured that was an unusual way of measuring the CG. In my years of flying experience the suggested CG seemed wrong. So I set up my plane CG at 200mm from the leading edge of the wing. This CG was confirmed to be correct after the Maiden flight.
When I completed my build, we took both my LX A4 / Freewing hybrid and the LX A4 PNP to the field. We flew the LX /Freewing with a ChinaHobby Line 6S 4000mah battery ( battery compartment had to be carved out and modified to achieve the Required CG of 200mm). The reason we used the 6S 4000mah battery was to add more nose weight to compensate the heavier Freewing 70mm metal EDF at the tail area. The plane had adequate power, and sounded like a real jet. The flight time was 3 minutes and 28% battery left. It glided well and had a very smooth landing. It flew like the Freewing Mirage but not as fast. On the other hand, the more expensive $350 LX A4 SkyHawk with 5 bladed 70mm EDF 2100kv motor, sounded terrible, was extremely under powered. We flew this PNP model with Genesis 6s 3300mah battery and because of the lighter EDF, we did not have to make any changes to the battery compartment. Wtih this set up, the CG was the same as my set up of the KIT version. The plane bounced during landing, and as we tried to throttle up and come around for another attempt at landing, it did not have enough power to recover. Instead it did a high alpha and stalled mid air and torque rolled to the left and crashed. I believe if we had a different and a more powerful motor, it would have recovered nicely.
In my opinion, the KIT version is a plane that is built well but needs upgraded electronics to fly well. Aslo, LX models should have made this plane a 80mm EDF. The EDF compartment has enough room to allow you to put an 80mm EDF motor, but you may have to move the motor forward a bit and shoot some foam around it. However, the $235 price and the added cost of servos, ESC, EDF, and motor $200, brings you to a price point well over $400. I believe you can buy a better model for this price from Motion RC, without the 20 hour build time. I am posting some pictures of the planes, including one with me holding it for size reference. The difference between the PNP and the KIT planes is the black paint stripe in front of the canopy. The black strip in front of the canopy is rounded on the crashed A4 and the same black portion before the nose is squared off on my KIT version.

nice job but have to ask ...why the red afterburner lights on a plane that didn't have a burner?

I just ordered the Kit version through Toucan Hobby, and had a few questions before I order parts:
When you say it had adequate power on the 70mm freewing, do you feel like it was sluggish at all? Excessively long takeoff roll? Basically, what does adequate mean to you? I'm not looking for a screamer. Don't need a lot of vertical. I'm building it to honor a friend who has passed that flew A-4s for the Navy.

When you say "shoot some foam in it", what are you talking about?

What landing gear did you us?

Appreciate any help you could provide!

I absolutely love the Skyhawk, and I have scratch built several. I had been eyeballing the LX offering as well, but with dismal past performances from the F-4 and F-22, I just could not justify the price over all of the modification that would be necessary to produce even a decent flying model. So, I admire it from afar, and I refuse to deal with The Fruit, having been burned by them in the past on a few things. One of these days maybe Freewing will roll out a shiny new A-4 for us to play with, but until then I will just have to play with what is available.

The stock set up is under powered. It barely takes of in our 300ft paved runway. If you need to bail out and come back for another landing, the original 70mm does not have enough power to get you out of a jam. This plane should have been an 80mm or 90mm EDF set up. However, the FreeWing 70mm inrunner power is similar to the Freewing F86 Sabre. It does not fly the same, because it is a delta wing, however the people at our airfield who bought the PNP set up wished they bought the KIT version. The stock landing gears rip out easily on bumpy landing. The foam around the main landing gears could use some reinforcements.

I've had several LX models over the years, and they were all junk. I understood this, and always bought the kit versions. I bungeed every one of them because the landing gear on these models is total junk. A couple of them flew quite nice though, when properly set up with a good power system.

                What retracts did you use?

I have six flights on my LX A-4 and it flies great, other than the loud whine of the 70mm fan, it's fun. I got the pnp version and the build was great, looks nice too, easy to take off and land. I'm using Gensace/Tattu 6S 5000 45C lipos and it handles them pretty good, it's not fast but does the job, little bit pricey but hey, if you always wanted a scooter, go for it.

The KIT Version comes with great CNC aluminum retracts. They are a bit heavy but great quality. Be sure to scuff the landing gear cradle before gluing it to the wing, otherwise the smooth surface causes it to delaminate during landings.

Wow... I'd love to see pics of the battery bay to see how you got a 5000mAh to balance in the plane.

Also, is the belly flat enough to belly land in the grass? Just curious...

                        Thanks!

Which components are you using, RacerX600rr? Retracts, or just the power system?

I found the stock LX A-4 power system to be alright for scale cruising. Consumption was higher than I'd have liked, but it's not out of line with the weight and other factors at play in this model. The doors are a nice touch!

Hey DSCorsair, what flight times are you getting on average with the Gensace/Tattu 6S 5000 45C battery?

I picked up the same power system as the newer 6s f-16 and a 100a esc. I plan on using the stock retract system but replacing the gear with something else. Maybe the freewing A-6 intruders mains? still searching for a tall nose gear to get that proper "scooter" stance.

I'm still working on flight times using the 5000 45C batts, I know 3 minutes won't be a problem, here it is with the 5000 in it, balances fine and I can even move the battery forward to the black line, if you can see it in the picture, also showing where I balanced mine at using the 600mm from the tip of the nose and it's about right on the panel line, very easy and I balanced mine with gear down and upright.

'm VERY tempted, but I know FW will eventually deliver a nice 80-90mm Scooter for us that have been holding out.

Yeah, I knew FW might have one in the works but I couldn't wait that long, I needed something else to fly while I'm waiting for my A-10 to ship so I decided to go for it, great little flyer, now have 7 flights and the take off and landings are the best part, other than that it flies like any other EDF, it does have an awesome roll rate..............

I hear ya... I might as well and do a hot 13b setup on 5000 to help push the drag and weight. Haha! Why not?
