  • Butch Sickels F-106 Kit

After a long time searching, I finally found a reasonable deal on an F-106 kit! I was at a local Warbird event, and found out that one of the guys there had an Butch Sickles F-106 kit that was in need of some attention. At 70" long and a 42" span, it's no small jet, and has a fiberglass fuselage with balsa sheeted foam wings. The model does have its share of issues though. The first and most major issue was that a previous owner apparently thought that F-106s had anhedral. Both wings were glued to the fuselage with around 10 degrees of anhedral. On top on that, there was no spar! The wings were simply epoxied to the edge of the fiberglass. There was also a good bit of damage to the fiberglass on the left wing root. Apparently, someone tried to hacksaw the wing off when they realized it was glued incorrectly, and went through the fiberglass. There is also next to no ducting completed, and a fuselage former appears to be missing. This is going to a long term project, but I am very happy that I finally managed to locate a 106 at all. I'm not sure how much I'll get around to updating this thread as I have about 10 other projects going on at the same time, but I'll try to do my best. The first thing I am going to try to do is reach out to the original designer of the kit, who is local in the DFW area. Hopefully he can provide some insight into exactly what is complete or missing with the kit. I also removed the wings with an exact knife as soon I got it through the door, couldn't stand the look with anhedral.

Excellent score, Delta! That's gonna be a fun project. ;)

That's a pretty cool score. Darts are hard to come by. Looks like you've got a lot to work with.

Thanks guys, I've been looking for an F-106 for so long I had pretty much given up at this point. Especially since the only one still available runs about $2k... I got this for a LOT less than that. For less than $200, in fact. I'll certainly have my work out for me on this project though! The nice thing is that the airframe is built very light, and I hope to keep it (somewhat) that way. I am planning on adding a few addition features though, including operating speed brakes and possibly an opening canopy.

Thanks, I'll have to post more on that project soon as well! I just finished moving the tail rotor fairing to the correct side, and am planning on starting the surface detail and cockpit next. I've been having so much fun with my Little Bird that I needed another scale heli to join it :).

Not going to lie, I may have bought a Connex FPV system in anticipation of flying it (the OV-10, not my 106) in the future.. I'm sure its coming any day now Charlie!
