  • Dynam T-28, you guys using a gyro?

Just bought the dynam T-28, curious if most guys are using just a receiver, or a receiver/gyro combo. Does this plane need a stabilizer or is it pretty mellow without one?

    Hi Weedesnager,

I have the Dynam T-28 and really like it. I am not flying with a gyro, just a standard receiver and have no issues with control on it. It is not the fastest bird out there, but does have power for nice loops and such. I also set up the flaps, but so far have not needed them on landings. It comes in pretty slow and gentle, just a touch of flair before setting the main gear down and it rolls out nicely even on short grass. I would say the plane is pretty mellow to fly and land. Good luck, I think you will enjoy the T-28!

I fly with the EagleTree Guardian, which makes it steady as a rock on windier days. On calmer days, no, doesn't need it, especially if you use a 4S battery and a 45A ESC; very quick and maneuverable. On 3S, I found it a little slow to take off.

        Greetings Weedsnager

I have the Dynam 1270mm t-28 and love it. I fly with no gyro. Its very stable and predictable. The only problem I have had is with the retracts. They do NOT work in cold weather. Found that out the hard way and had to make a semi controlled crash landing. The plane survived but now the nose gear is locked in the up position. Does anyone know how to force the gear down? Its grounded until I get a new retract or figure out how to get the existing one down.

I have one and do not use a stab on this one as it does not need it.

You could try taking the retract apart. The main gear drives what looks like a fine threaded machine screw. As the screw turns, the gear comes down. Probly has a bur in the threads from impact, binding the gear from coming down. If that dont work, then you will need a new retract.

Thanks Fly Boy That's exactly what I ended up doing. Not sure if there is a bur in the threads or not. I'll do more checking on that when warm weather returns. Just happy I got the gear down and can fly it

Your welcome Jeff, and if you ever have any Q's on the bird, feel free to ask.  I used to have one.  Crashed and rebuilt mine a few times. Know that bird inside and out. Every screw, every wire. I up graded my nose wheel strut because I sucked at landing at first. The stock one was weak. This is an easy mod ounce you know and understand how the retract works and is put together. Another tip is dont put a 4 cell batt pack to the stock motor. Sure it makes it go faster, but only for a short while. Motor will burn out and before it does, it will sound like it has a out of balance prop during flight. heavy vibration sound. Been there done that. Dead stick landing was intresting for sure.  I did end up with a 4 cell set up that works awsome. Increased speed guessing 20 - 25 mph. Got compliments on its speed a lot after I installed this cheap set up. Switched out the motor out of a Dynam Waco, or a Dynam SU-26 and a Dynam 50 amp ESC.  kept the 3 blade T28 prop. This is cool because its all plug and play. Then if you still want more speed just switch prop to 11x12 single blade. Up grade to taller tires , Then you can go to a 12 x 8 prop which comes on a Waco.  Food for thought, Happy flying from the Pacific NW

                  Hey Fly Boy

Since you offered with questions... How much weight, if any, did you add to the nose. I'm up to one and a half oz and it still seems a little tail heavy. It balances out well on my home made balancer but have to trim elevator down to keep it from climbing when I fly her. Maybe I should just break down and buy a balancer

Check the thrust angle of the motor. To fly properly, it needs to be 5 degrees down. Mine came ~1.5 degrees down, and behaved the same way, but, now that I've shimmed the top of the motor mount, it flies just fine.

Capt. Crunch,  I dont recall adding any weight to the nose at all. I remember it being all about batt placement.
My 3 cell 2200mah was pushed all the way forward in the batt bay. balance was fine. After converting to 4 cell set up,
Batt placement was mid to aft in the bay. I do recommend a CG bal machine for sure. At the time I owned my T-28, I was using my finger tips LOL. But it was close enough. I also found in my experience that just because you had to trim a little elevator into it dont mean your balance is off. It was a clasp adjustment at the elevator horn connection that was needed. I've seen a lot of people add not needed nose weight for the same issue then wonder why there airplane drops on its nose during landings. been there done that one to. I destroyed a F4U Corsair because I added to much weight to get the nose down during flight, When it was that clasp adjustment I just wrote about. I learned to fly the hard way to say the least. I had nobody to teach me, or anybody to show me. So if I can pass on any info that may save your day, and keep you in the skies, I hope to help. Trial and error is expensive. With proper set ups you will also begin to notice how much easier it to land as well. Floating down like an umbrella and greasing the landing every time attributes to proper set up as well. Have fun and good luck from the Pacific NW.

There is a lot more to this hobby than just flying. Its just as enjoyable working on them in the shop getting them dialed in, and adding mods.

Just so you all know, that 5 degree down thrust is from official Navy documentation for the full-scale craft.

I took your advice and shimmed the top of the motor. I went about 3-4 degrees and WOW its a totally different plane. Flies true and level. Makes landings a lot easier too!  Thanks so much for sharing your experience

I think it's amazing that what the US Navy found out about the full-scale airframe applies to our foam models, too. Of course, instead of right thrust on the engine, they had a slight offset to the tail fin, which we can't easily reproduce. Still, something to think about.

My cowl is held on with magnets, and just slides off the front, once the prop is removed. Are you talking of something else?

@Weedsnager: I shimmed my motor with a thin strip of CF, notched a bit to set on the screws, and glued in place. I just rummaged around my spare stock until I found a piece the right thickness.
