Unless I learn something different, I am going to get the DX6 $199 and the Radian UMX on sale now $79. At least I will be moving forward.

        G'day BBQ,
If your local club suggested that you go to another club to fly a Radian, then go. That is the greatest load of crock I have seen written here and they should be ashamed of them selves.
My club is actually situated inside the three nautical miles limit and have our civil aviation governing body's approval to fly where we are. Yep, the 400 foot limit is stressed to us and we have to have a scanner radio to monitor radio traffic and two people at the field when we are flying models. One to monitor the scanner and look for traffic and one flying.
A model aircraft will only go where you allow it to go and if the bloke at the sailplane club was having a hard time with altitude, he was not much of a pilot.
Simple to loose height. Put the nose down and use the funny spinning thing on the front.
I think you have drawn a bad bunch and it is not your fault.
I would suggest that you do not try and teach your self. It can be done. The first RC pilots had to learn everything from scratch but getting someone to help you out will save you from the dreaded six second flight. You know what I am saying? Three seconds up, stall for a second and two seconds down.
I often managed to get sixty minute flights out of Radian when the conditions were right and never went over three hundred. I also often managed just fifteen on battery power alone.
Try to find a club that embraces all about our hobby/sport/pastime and a club like that will normally have a good sense of humour to go along with it.
I wish you were close to us as not only would you be welcome to our club, but we would teach you to fly and joke along with you. Modelling is supposed to FUN.
        Regards and respect
        Daryl

I thought I would come back and update this discussion with the most recent developments.

          I found a new club that's a good fit.

Working with a gentleman in the club I've decided to go to the Toledo swap meet and show next month with the goal of buying a glow powered trainer for around $100.

If that doesn't pan out, I will buy the FMS Super EZ and we will be off and running

I'll start training in April with the club.

Its more challenging the glow route. As it was explained on the other thread. If you can fly glow/balsa, then you can easily fly foam, but it does not work most of the time the other way around.

Although I still think a Bixler or some sort of electric pusher plane w wingspan of 1400mm or more for good visibility. The airplane may seem big when one carries it around, it will blend w the sky, disappear quick before you know it.

I was lucky enough to be in a club where I had a lot of support, there was a lot to learn about glow.
