  • Freewing P-51 Canopy DOES slide!

    Hi everyone,
I thought I had seen somewhere some grumblings about the Freewing Iron Ass canopy not sliding open as advertised.  Well, after finally starting my assembly this afternoon I spent some time looking at the canopy.  Yes, it looked like it should slide back, HOWEVER, how???  I pulled and pulled (gently) to no avail.  I finally inserted a thin blade between the two canopy pieces and pried a bit.  VOILA, it separates!  The insertion ball part fits VERY tight into the receiving socket. I might have to do some work to get it to work easier, but it does work.  I have attached some photographic evidence.

Cool!  I like the look of the Freewing pilot much better than the FMS, I wonder if they're interchangeable?
Also, does anyone know if the canopy on the FMS P51D is removable?  Can't seem ti get mine off, but I'd love to get access to the cockpit to do some detail work.
    Any suggestions?

I know what your talking about. Mine has gone from being a scary amount of pressure to operate it. To sliding open on it's own.

I opened my canopy once and figured it wasn't worth going through the process again. Very tight fit and I feel lucky i didn't break anything.

A friend has this plane. He couldn't get the canopy to open either...until he crashed it. Now it slides back and forth nicely :D
