  • P-38 Maiden

    Tomorrow is the day,
Flight attempt #2, may have had weak batteries on first attempt, but have bumped to 3S from 2S anyway.
At this time last year, I rekindled my interest in R/C after receiving an indoor drone. I've hung on to 4 airplanes since my last flights in the mid 90's, and in various stages of completion. When I began this airplane, Astro-Cobalt was the Premier electric power source and the joke trend was regarding an electric ducted fan ( since they did not exist.).
So, shortly after the drone gift, it became apparent that the technology had finally caught up with my plan.
That plan - make a Guillows P-38 really fly.
She wanted to fly on the taxi test and first attempt maiden, and let's just say ver. 2.0 is already materializing.
If the maiden goes well and my test pilot gets her trimmed - I will grab the sticks for the next flight and get me some warbird time.
I am confident she will fly, Just a little concerned at how fast that may need to be.

Dunno why my videos won't load here, YouTube doesn't seem to like them either but work fine on FB...

anyway she took off, and cleared the end of the runway climbing nicely, then rolled left into the dirt. Was looking so good.

That's too bad F22, but don't let it stop you. Sounds like success is very close!

Far from it. I've had another kit on the shelf just in case. But I've learned enough from finalizing all the mechanicals on this one that Ver. 2.0 should be 10 times better.
It did fly nicely to climb to 50' very smoothly and then rolled left. Not sure of cause...yet.
I know it was stupid high on the wing load and took way more nose weight than I would have liked to balance. The way it went in it should be in splinters, however it could be reconstructed. But that said there were a few things I would have done differently and can get her on a diet right from the start.
