  • 980mm Corsair

I love my FMS 800mm Corsair. I like the size but it would be nice if someone would offer one just a bit larger. A 980mm would be perfect. Flaps would be good but no retracts, to keep the price point low. I would want something that you could hand launch just like the 800mm birds. I already have the 980mm FMS p-40 but it has retracts and retracts are in my opinion just a recipe for expensive repair or replacement.

From 800mm to 980mm wingspan is only about 7" and that's not a huge difference in size. You'd have to go a bit bigger if you want the Corsair in that size range. There are a couple examples:
This one is fairly cheap ............ https://www.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXBCKB&P=ML It's "cheap" and one has to wonder why.
This one is of better quality but then, the price goes up .............. https://www.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXHDBP&P=7

The problem with the Corsair is that it's been done to death and I doubt any manufacturer is going to make yet another one that's only 7" bigger than one that already exists. Once you get bigger than that, you are looking at a higher price point and more equipment. The best part of a Corsair are those neat rotating landing gear. Most people want the plane for that feature and to buy one and remove the gear is a bit of a waste of money but if you really want it, that's what you're going to have to do. Also, once you get to that size of plane, it's going to be difficult to hand launch, in part due to the power to weight ratio and in part due to the unwieldy nature of the plane for throwing. After all, it's not a glider or a flying wing. It'll need a strong toss to get it to speed so it can actually fly. You'd have to find a hill to throw it off or from the roof of a small building. Then comes the belly landing. The bigger the plane, the harder it's going to be on the underbelly to come skidding on the ground. Then there's the bigger, stiffer prop. It'll drive into the ground and most likely break.

HobbyKing used to have an 1100mm Durafly Corsair but it was lower quality and the retracts were garbage. A few people (not me) removed the retracts and threw them. Most of the time, unless the power system was upgraded, people simply threw them into the dirt as it couldn't get going fast enough to stay in the air long enough to gain airspeed. They've discontinued it for a reason. People realized what junk it was and the word got around and they couldn't sell them anymore.

Thank you for the great info. This seems to be at first glance exactly what I am looking for.

I placed an order for the Tower Hobbies F4U Corsair. I will let you all know what I think of it when I get it. It looks good and the price is definitely an attraction.

Just be sure to fly it and carry speed in all aspects of the flight, she is stall happy. The hellcat is a much better much more dossal flying plane. A buddy of mine had both and from watching him fly both that was my observation.

No problem, I look forward to hearing what you think about it once you get to fly. May just try moving the cg just a hair forward from the manual suggestion. Just see how you feel when you get it, as I do know he ran his at the factory suggested cg point
