  • FMS Stuka anyone?

Just wondering if anyone has the FMS Stuka? Looks like a nice plane and wanted some personal experiences from anyone.

WOW, from the lack of replies on this I will assume none of our current forum crowd has this aircraft. That's OK, I was just curious. It just looked kind of unique and I wanted a German contribution to my warbird American/Japanese duo.

I as well was looking to see some insight on this plane, I was thinking the same as you rf. A Stuka, and a BF-109 would be great in my collection.

        Hey guys,
I have the smaller Durafly Stuka, 1100mm size that is made by FMS. It is a very nice flying plane, and surprisingly stable. I was holding off answering since you asked about the larger version. I have read that it also is an excellent flyer, but not having flown that one, I can't vouch for it. They do look good in the air! Hope this helps.

I did have the Stuka. Loved the plane. An esc failure caused a major crash that resulted in a battery puncture with fire. An interesting day, to say the least. Up until that point, everything was great. If you get that bird, pay good attention to set up of the flaps. Very important to the stability of the airframe. Also, being a "gull wing" , the roll rate will be slow. The power was good in my opinion, and just a great piece of history to have at the field. Hope this helps.

            Thanks,
I'm glad someone had a Stuka.  It is a unique looking plane and I thought it would be a great addition.  I also kind of liked that it didn't have retracts.  One less thing to worry about.  They look very sturdy too. Thanks for the info about the flaps.

              Hi Retired!
There was a good video on you tube on it, may be worth looking up, it seemed to fly well.

                RE: FMS Stuka anyone?

I have had 2 FMS Stukas...LOVE that warbird.  Personally I think it has the highest scale fidelity of all their warbird line.  So easy to takeoff and land, so graceful (yet menacing especially with those tank busters!) in the air.  I wish they would come out with a 1700mm size but I don't think there's a strong enough market for it.

If you get one, just make sure you get the aileron and flap deflection to match the angle of the trailing edge of the wing or all kinds of non-intended fun can occur on takeoff.  Just ask me how I know.

                :P

Nothing but good things to say and good memories of that bird.  Sold it to fund another project but it's one of those warbirds I keep thinking about and wishing I never sold.  :)

Thanks for the great photos Aros, and the info. You too Jack and Gman. Jack, that sounded like a major disaster for you, sorry! At the risk of sounding corny, I just think this plane is cool looking. Like everyone has said, not something you see in people's hangers too much. May have to spring for one of these in the Spring, sorry, bad pun.

It's one of my favorite looking warbirds. So sleek and mean looking. Looks like it could have been a fighter but the big tank busters and perma-feet negated that. :D

Yeah, its pretty cool, reminds me of the COX string flying plane when I was a kid.  I had the Spitfire and a friend of mine had the Stuka, it was a really great looking airplane.
Did you find the video?  It does fly well from the vid, but if it were me, I'd want to see it dive!

I can't say how the 1400mm Stuka dives, but my Durafly 1100mm Stuka really dives nice! I take it up high, roll over on her back, and pull some "up" elevator, and she really screams for the ground! I prefer the green color that the 1400 FMS comes in, but still love the Durafly (FMS) version too. Overall, it is a very docile flyer. Slow roll rates, plenty of power for loops, just fun to fly.

Good stuff, this is on my to purchase list one of these days. With those wheel pants how does it handle off of grass?

It does surprisingly well on grass. The field I fly from is a soccer field, and as long as I stay in the well worn areas, I have no problems. I am sure the 1400 size would do even better.

I "almost" got that instead of the P-51 but the Mustang is just sexy looking ya know? That will definitely be warbird #2 if (when?) I get another one. Maybe in the summer....?

Thanks, the video was good. Kind of dragged his wing a bit on that landing....but hey, who hasn't done that! Seems most people remove the cannons after a few flights too. This plane is a definite possibility.

It really is a fantastic flyer. The 67" FMS warbirds are all great flyers as well. If you want speed go for the P-51D with the prop mod. Corsair looks amazing in the air and especially coming in on final approach with full flaps. P-47 is graceful in the air as well. All trainer-like tendencies.
