New Plane

Got my Dynam Waco in and its built . The build is not bad but I don't sugest a novice builder to do it . The instructions were horrible ,I didn't even use them .

Dynam paint is not bad I have noticed they are all dull . I used the MinWax gloss to bring in some shine and I am very happy with it . I know some of you do it with a brush but I can't ever get it to look right so I airbrushed it .

Hope to fly it soon the weather is starting to get better .

Congrats Bryan, I love this plane and its on my bucket list!  Minwax really does the job doesn't it.  I remember my Rochobby Waco before the Minwax and it was ok, but WOW it was outstanding afterwards.  Can't wait to hear how she flies

People...people!! I'm so sorry I started this Minwax craze before I learned about Varathane water base!!! Varathane is SO much better quality. No bubbles, no streaking, better gloss, and much more flexible. Home Depot has it. Try it! Doc

Hi Doc, I have the Varathane on my pick up list as well!  Just that when you live a couple of hours from the major shopping area, you tend to use what is available in the local area.
As a matter of interest, have you coated over the Minwax with varathane?

Hey Bryan, if you have an old piece that you've replaced, try rubbing Minwax on it with a piece of cloth, you'll find that you don't need to IPA before hand, the Minwax will remove the mold release oil.  Up until recently, all I would do after that was use a foam brush, apply it in one direction and the smooth it out at ninety degrees from that.
Also, when airbrushing, Minwax (and I'm sure Varathane as well) makes a great glaze base as well.  What I mean by that is it will help make the color you are applying transparent, great for showing sun damaged color or weather beaten paint.

When I used the Minwax, and I'm not sure it was BECAUSE of the Minwax, I got that perfect weathering look by mistake. It smudged the black panel lines I had airbrushed on. I will get the Varathane at some point, but I like what it did for my weathered Zero. Like I said, it could be just a coincidence.

Hey Gman I've been trying different things on some old junk pieces but I still don't get what I want with a foam or hair brush . When I airbrush I usually thin it down with some water , about 3 parts wax 1 part water . I found when I put very lite coat on give it a few mins then go back I'm getting the finish I'm looking for . I did all the cleaning and removing the release agent with alcohol and still no better . Another thing I found was if I use a brush over some paint it will remove paint if not careful . Never a issue with the airbrush .I never get any lines in my finish that have to try to smooth out either . Only downside is I need to do it down in my garage because I do get some fog so I can't do it in the house .
I will be getting some of the other that Doc is referring to but I need to leave my little town to get it . I only have a Walmart and a Lowes here .

That looks fun Bryan! I had one back in the early 80's, Pico I think, with a .60 engine on it. It was very aerobatic but you had to fly stick and rudder coordinated turns as I recall. It was a long time ago and I'm old.... LOL!

WOW!  You have a Lowes!  We have an Ace Hardware and a Walmart, some smaller privately owned ones.
If you've ever watched the movie "Did You Hear about the Morgans"
They go to Cody and they have an Applebees and a Costco!!
In reality, we can only dream!
Heading for Billings this weekend and am hitting the Hobby Shop there as well as the big box stores!
I've tried the Minwax both ways now and, like you say, it depends on what effect your going for.  But definitely a window opener when I spray it!! (in the basement of course!)
