  • Freewing P-51 Old Crow Update

    Customers,
Due to factors outside our control we are unable to include the signed Certificate of Authenticity (COA) with the first batch of Old Crow P-51s due to arrive this week.  As a result, we have discounted both the standard and Merlin sound versions by $30 to account for the lack of COA.  The planes arriving this week are the exact same specifications as the ones with COAs, they simply do not include the signed certificate.
For those wanting to wait for a version with a signed certificate, we expect to have COAs available in time for our summer shipment of P-51 due in the June/July 2015 timeframe.

Sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused,
    Mark

Wow, I was hoping for the whole package! That's a pretty hefty discount though! I assume we will be able to place our orders within the next few days?
Any day you can fly is a good day!  :D

Excellent Mark! Can I ask you a question? There is mention in the product description that a pilot can still "choose" to operate the plane with the scale 4-blade prop and spinner. The same as the Iron Ass version of the plane. Does the Old Crow come with both versions of prop and spinner - the 2-blade and the 4-blade - or do we need to purchase the 4-blade separately? Thanks for your help.

The model only includes the two blade prop.  You would need to purchase the four blade separately.

Both the sound and no sound versions are now on-line and instock.

RE: Freewing P-51 Old Crow Update

There was a slight miscommunication and the optional 4 blade Old Crow spinner will not arrive for 2 more weeks. The old crow 4 blade spinner and prop are optional and not included in with the plane. The Old Crow includes a 2 blade spinner and 2 blade speed prop.

Hmm, think I'll wait for the COA and the proper propeller.  Can we pre order that or do we have to wait?

RE: Freewing P-51 Old Crow Update

There are no plans to offer this with the 4 blade prop and spinner in the box. We did a lot of research and found most would prefer the performance of the 2 blade. Unfortunately, it is not as simple as throwing both props in the box. The spinners are different due to the different pitch of the two props. Initially we wanted the 2 blade prop to fit the 4 blade spinner but that became impossible and a new mold for a new spinner had to be made.

RE: Freewing P-51 Old Crow Update

Ok, but on the other other "Old Crow" update you said,
"Yes, the signature/COA is expensive $$. Bud has to earn a living! I think what we will do is simply add a third version of the plane at that time but we are not 100% sure how we will handle it yet."
Are you referring to a version with a four blade spinner/prop, if not what would the third version be?
I'm not asking you to simply throw in another spinner and prop, I'm saying keep the two blade spinner and prop and give me the four blade spinner and prop and charge me the $4 difference.
(Four blade spinner and two blade spinner are the same price, $7.49, four blade prop sets are $7.99, two blade prop is $3.99, the difference is $4.00)
I'm not sure where you did your research, but there are a lot of us here who also e mail back and forth who would beg to differ.
Anyway, I've said enough on the subject, I would really love the plane with the COA and a 4 blade prop and am ready to order the minute it is available, what can you do for me?

RE: Freewing P-51 Old Crow Update

The performance difference with the 2 blade is enormous. You can take off in 10 feet, go up with unlimited vertical from takeoff, and nearly hover the plane. Oh and it's fast. The thrust is amazing. This is one of the things that differentiates it from the other version of the Freewing Mustang. Everyone we demoed this plane for was amazed and our research indicates the 2 blade was the way to go (with larger motor and ESC of course). Again, we were sure to make a 4 blade spinner and prop with this Old Crow livery for those who want it but it.

The third version would be a more expensive plane which includes a COA.

This is our idea for versions:
                      1) PNP without sound
                      2) PNP with sound
                      3) PNP with (and maybe without sound) with COA.

All will have 2 blade props. We will not add 3 or 4 more versions which have a 4 blade spinner and prop. We made the decision to have a 2 blade spinner and prop included with the plane. While we would love to be super flexible, swapping spinners and props would unfortunately cause an absolute accounting and inventory nightmare for us so our flexibility is limited if we want our accounting and inventory systems to be accurate.

So Grossman: how do you like the Mustang that "can take off in 10 feet, go up with unlimited vertical from takeoff, and nearly hover"? I thought not, and I'm with ya! Can't recall ever seeing film of a WWII bird "hovering" over Germany in 1944! You might as well break down and accept the fact that you are going to have to buy a 2 blade prop and spinner that you will throw in a drawer, and then need to buy the optional 4 blade and spinner to actually fly with. Nothing against the 3D guys and doing what they enjoy, but I'm an airplane guy that likes his airplanes to look, and fly, like real airplanes! I think it's somewhat humorous to see what some model aviation enthusiasts view as desirable features these days!

Thanks for your support Dave, yep a hovering Mustang just doesn't do it for me, and a COA for what?  I know Bud's P51:
                          A) Did not have a two bladed prop
B)Certainly didn't hover or climb unlimited  vertically
So again, we're catering to the 3D crowd.
So, it's not the plane for me.  I just ordered an autographed copy of  "To Fly and Fight" from Bud's son, which is the closest I'm going to get for a COA.
I'm going to order the Iron Ass version, strip it down, order a decal set from Callie Graphics, and paint a better metal finish on it than the stock ones every had and end up with the plane I want, not the one I have to settle for.
Ah well, I gave it a try, pulling the trigger now

I do want to point out this is NOT a 3D plane. It cannot fly 3D. It is a performance plane to have fun with. We worked really hard to bring enthusiasts this plane. The forums are full of people asking for more performance out of a Mustang. We delivered it and it's disappointing to see the negativity. We suspect the majority are really going to like this plane.

Wow, I hope you will post the finished product on the thread so we can see it! I salute you sir!
As for the 3D crowd, they can certainly fly whatever contraption they like, with big flat foam square wings for all I care (they all "fly" the same), but why intrude on scale warbirds? I'll stick to airplanes that look and fly like airplanes.

Nothing against MRC Tom. You guys need to put out products that will sell the best. I'm sure the Old Crow will be very successful, maybe more so than other similar models. Our grouse is more in general about the folks (your customers) who may want a WWII warbird that can "nearly hover" or have unlimited vertical climb capability. People that want the airplanes that look and fly in a scale like manner are likely in the minority.

Thanks Dave and I couldn't agree more!  The Iron Ass with Merlin sound is on its way as I just placed the order.  Sorry Tom, I really like MotionRC, but when I'm shelling out half a grand on a plane and can't even get the prop I want unless I buy it as an extra, then I have to question why I'm buying it at all.  As I said before, the simple fix would have been to offer both versions.  Authenticity was the key word for me here, and a two blade prop on a Mustang is just not authentic, heck even Strega which is advertised as a High Speed P51 managed to keep her authenticity, arguably she is a 1070 mm but still............
I wish you and MotionRC all the best with this bird, but its just not for me.
By the way, since last summer I've purchased multiple thousands of dollars worth of products from MotionRC and have been a loyal customer.  My thread "all us newbies lets share" on this site is one of if not the highest viewed threads here.
                                Just sayin'
