  • FMS 1400mm B-25 rebuild

    A mishap a couple of months ago grounded my Mitchell and I was convinced it was a total loss.  In fact, I didn't look it for a month because it made me sick to think about it.  One Saturday, I decided to pull it out from under the bench, wipe the dirt off of it and plug a battery in just to assess the damage (pilot error...nosed in from ~100AGL).  Much to my surprise, everything was in working order....EVERYTHING (except the fuselage from the leading edge forward!).  Retracts were fine, both motors worked and the shafts were true, wings were unharmed, horizontal and vertical surfaces were fine, too.  And all the servos were perfect.  I was lucky and smiling again.

    I ordered parts and decided I'd add some things that I had wished I'd had on the original:
    * flaps
    * shorter main struts (less 10mm) and 3" main wheels
    * remove gear doors
    * raked nose wheel strut
    * tail gunner canvas boot
    * metal finish
    * red beacon on top of fuse
    * Eflite switch activating landing lights with gear down/lights off when gear retracted
    * Rx mounted in top turret

    I used the gear door servos for the flaps and HVAC foil tape for the new look.  It took several weeks to finish the project but it was worth it.  Watt test indicates I should be okay with the additional weight. I'd like to re-maiden it if the wind/weather will cooperate. Wish me luck!

      Thanks Charlie. The idea came from Motion's video featuring both the green and silver B25s. If you look real close, they added a few shiny panels to Panchito. I just took their idea, studied the real one online and ran with it. Looking forward to a successful remaiden....I've got a lot of time, money and hope invested in this bird.

            Successful remaiden! The extra weight was manageable and the flaps work extremely well. Landings were noticeably slower and I'm able to land it on the mains versus three-points. Very nice to have this one back in the rotation!

              Congrats on the reentry back into the rotation of one hell of fine warbird.
              I am so envious of you folks that are getting to fly. Our club field is on top of a mountain with a mile long gravel road that has 3 switch backs in it to get to the top. Still have 6 inches of snow on that access road because the tree cover keeps the sun from getting at it. BUMMER

                Congratulations on the successful remaiden flight. You did an outstanding job on the rebuild too! That B-25 is on my wish list, hope to have one of my own this year. Enjoy the flying.
